Influencer Life Review: Amyra Dastur in a Half-Baked Short

Influencer Life is a short film directed by Tanmai Rastogi, produced by Kanika Sehgal Rastogi, Mohit Rastogi and Zulfaquar Haider Torabi, and stars Amyra Dastur and Satish Ray. The film has a runtime of 27 minutes.

The 27-minute Influencer Life takes just a tiny peek into the ins and outs of influencers, their lives and their livelihoods and provides a glimpse into how far people can go for clout. The film tries its best to pack as much information as they possibly can into a very short runtime, but there is something missing in it that you can feel after the initial few minutes.

The movie is about Kareena, an influencer who herself is very influenced by Korean aesthetic and the vegan lifestyle. It’s apparent that she’s not the person she portrays herself to be in her reels, and the distinction between her on and off-camera persona is quite stark. So much so that sometimes it feels a bit goofy.

The film tries very hard to portray this person as a hollow, materialistic influencer who doesn’t really care about anything or anyone. Its character background is so forcefully fed to us that it almost seems a bit much, as if Kareena is a caricature instead of a living, breathing individual who might just be any of our favourite influencers.

This is where the short really falters. It portrays a story that is not believable in the slightest and feels ingenuine and madeup. Sure, we know that influencers would do anything to those extra followers, but the way that the situations and the people are portrayed just doesn’t feel organic.

Moreover, I am a little unclear about the ending. Like, sure is working with everyone and all that but the way the movie gives us its information, it doesn’t seem like what it’s trying to show is what is actually happening. Or is it another twist? Either way, it’s the problem of trying to do and show too much in a very short runtime. It feels packed and overwhelming, and the resolution isn’t that satisfying.

Amyra Dastur pulls this short pretty well; it’s all dependant on how she presents herself and reacts to her surroundings, and I found her quite on-par with her character. She’s annoying in the right amounts, and although you never sympathise with her, that’s fine because that really wasn’t ever the point.

Summing Up: Influencer Life

influencer life

Influencer Life tries to pack too many punches in a short runtime and thus feels quite forced and unnecessary. The plot has some areas that don’t make sense, and the final resolution is lacklustre. At least Dastur looks cute as a button in her outfits which suit her extremely well.

Influencer Life is streaming on Amazon miniTV.
