In this true crime docudrama series, we explore real marital murders in India and explore relationships and how people end up killing their spouses. The series focuses on the psychological aspects of murders and murderers while also getting deep into the circumstances of the crimes and how love devolves into violence.

Balancing documentary facts and dramatised reconstructions, the series may feel exploitative in some ways because the reconstructions appear dramatic and overly exaggerated. The series is, otherwise, a fine watch for those who want to explore these cases a bit deeper and understand the psychology behind the decisions made by some of these people.

The problem with the series, though, it’s far too dramatic to be taken seriously. As someone who enjoys watching documentaries, this one feels a bit unreal at times and hard to take seriously because the psychologists themselves are so extra. The cases are quite interesting to explore, especially the exploration of mental health issues, but the retelling is a bit much and can get on your nerves. I think focusing more on friends, family and experts’ testimonies would’ve been a better choice, instead of bringing forth these unnecessarily expansive recreations.

Either way, I will say that not a lot of documentaries explore the psychology behind crimes, and it’s definitely an engaging experience. While you might see the sensationalism on your TV screens when the incidents took place, the documentary works as a great watch years after the situations and gives you something to think back to deeply. There are moments when you feel a bit confused about the sensationalism, overall, it works as a good reminder of how evil mindsets and social pressures can turn people deadly.

With several shocking crimes from all over the country, including the Meghalaya Sonam Raja Raghuvanshi Case, the Meerut Blue Drum case, the Bhiwani Influencer Case, the Mumbai Tile case and the Delhi Electric Shock Case. All of these cases, while ranging in how the crime is perpetrated, sometimes follow similar motivations. It’s gruesome, but the social backdrop for some of these cases will feel a bit too personal.

In the end, the series reminds us to care for our loved ones and keep our ears and eyes open. Although I would’ve enjoyed a bit more in-depth discussion, I guess it’s fine if you need your true crime fix, but the time you can dedicate is short. Some of the discussions surrounding psychology might feel surface-level and over-dramatic, which is, ultimately, the reason I didn’t enjoy it as much as I would’ve expected to.

Honeymoon Se Hatya is an interesting show, one that could’ve been memorable had it focused on diving deeper into the crimes instead of focusing on making things dramatic. The recreations are completely unnecessary and are added just to get a reaction out of viewers, and unfortunately, viewers will be able to spot this little trick from a mile away. That’s exactly what ruins the experience in the end.
