The series opens with a dead body being found in the woods in Dahlonega, Georgia, which opens up an intense investigation. Having disappeared for a year due to a tragedy, journalist Anna arrives at her hometown to investigate and get her job back and clashes with her estranged husband, Detective Jack, who is actively trying to uncover who it could be.

The victim Rachel’s promiscuous nature comes to light, but her husband doesn’t seem like the right choice, given that Rachel had seemingly had a sexual interaction with her assailant, and Duffie is unable to have sex due to physical ailments. As the investigation progresses, Jack becomes increasingly more and more erratic, and we soon discover that everyone has something to hide that can destroy their whole lives.

Although we are meant to believe that Jack is the killer throughout the runtime, we finally learn that it was Catherine, or Lexy Jones, one of her high school friends, who was behind the attacks.

Why were Rachel and her friends targeted?

In episode 6, we finally realise that the entire thing has to do with Anna’s friendships from St. Hilary’s and an incident that took place 20 years ago on Anna’s 16th birthday. They all went to the woods to party and celebrate, but soon some men showed up, thanks to Rachel, and they attacked Catherine while the others watched. They did nothing to stop them, and Catherine wanted revenge against everyone for destroying her life.

What happens in the end?

In the end, Catherine and Anna fight, at the end of which Jack and Priya arrive and kill Catherine. Anna and Jack finally open up to one another and decide to turn a new leaf. One year later, Anna is back in the news and is pregnant with Jack and his niece. Now a big happy family, they seem happy together and healing from old wounds.

In a shocking turn of events, we learn that Alice, Anna’s mother, was the real killer, having pinned everything on Catherine. On Anna’s 16th birthday, it was actually Anna who was raped by the men when she tried to save Catherine from them. Having seen the tapes of the incident, a heartbroken Alice wanted nothing more than revenge, especially with the guilt of losing her granddaughter under her care.

She orchestrated it all and killed them one by one, having remembered everything from the past and how she was treated by everyone. In the end, it was a mother’s desperate attempt to love her child in a twisted way, and Anna realises that too well. She forgives her mother as they share one last knowing look.
