HBO Reveals New Harry Potter Cast
After an extensive casting process that saw 30,000+ auditions, HBO has finally unveiled the talents who will portray the iconic trio of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley:
- Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter: A Scottish newcomer, McLaughlin’s only other acting role is in the upcoming Sky original comedy film Grow as Oliver Gregory. However, the young actor is sure to bring a lot of promise to his role.
- Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger: Stanton, with her experience on London’s West End as Matilda, is set to embody the resourceful Hermione that was previously made memorable by Watson. This will mark Stanton’s first on-screen role.
- Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley: Making his screen debut, Stout takes on the role of Harry’s best friend, Ron.
Fans online have praised the casting choice. One X user wrote, @That_N8 – “It’s happening! They all look perfect. I can’t wait for #HarryPotterHBO! ❤️” Another user, @hazza1990, wrote, “Great casting for Harry, Ron and Hermione! I just hope they are well protected from social media and the hate filled lunatics that will have no issue being hateful to children.”
Fans were quick to rain down on people who were making unnecessary comments about the new cast, especially because they are children. The unpleasantness, however, was overshadowed by fans who were mostly happy to see their favourite characters back onscreen. One user, @cescopaone, wrote: “The new era is Beginning.” It truly does feel like a new era, considering that the series comes almost 15 years after the end of the main film series with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011.
The project will be directed by Mark Mylod, with Francesca Gardiner joining as showrunner. Other supporting cast will include:
John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. Interestingly enough, the role of Lord Voldemort is still under wraps, which has fuelled heated speculations among fans.
