–Hannah Gadsby: Something Special Review–
Known for being brutally honest and adding extra spicy jokes to their routines, Gadsby announced to the audience in the first few minutes that it was going to be a ‘feel good’ show. And they stuck to her words, it was rather lighter and softer than their usual material. Directed by their lovely wife Jenney, the comedian was ready to throw some punches and dive deep into the storytelling, or so we thought.
It starts off well with a promising premise; however, at one point, you will get tired of waiting for the jokes to arrive. After a few minutes went by, the stories started to grow more uninteresting. Not because it was unrelatable but because it was plain boring. I did not lose hope yet, my optimism remained high, and I was ready to give yet another chance to the comedian to revive themselves. But I was proved utterly wrong. The script was beyond any rescue, and so was the show.
Nevertheless, it is important to point out that the comedian is an excellent storyteller. It is astonishing how I managed to stay put for an hour in something that did not intrigue me in the slightest solely due to their lively personality and ability to captivate the audience even with dull tales. The comedian presents themself as a very easy-going person, which instantly makes one want to befriend them. Moreover, they constantly included the audience and tried to create an interactive session.

The script was tight and well-rounded. It had a good introduction and a strong end, but it got lost in the middle like a ship in the Bermuda Triangle. It lacked intelligent jokes and felt more like confessions from a lesbian with an honest mother than a comedy special. The stories were intriguing and unique, but it is not exactly what one would expect from a stand-up special. However, one joke constantly played around the entire time, and that is why they could never date a man, which was incredibly hilarious.
Additionally, the script felt too formulated and meant to cater to a section of the audience. The gags felt unexciting and repetitive. There was a constant build-up of something thrilling, yet the revelations fell flat constantly. The script of the show is too safe and well-thought-out and lacks any improvisation or sudden jokes that leaves the people breathless. But the adorable story of them proposing to their wife makes up for half of the untimely, stale content of the show.
Hannah Gadsby: Something Special Review: Final Thoughts
The comedian decided to open up about their marriage this time, and it was rather sweet than funny. The series included tales about their mother being brutally honest and unique habits that will manage to take one or two giggle out of you. However, the script is not as intriguing or out of this world to keep one hooked to the routine throughout. It lacked some major aspects to make the show a memorable one. But if you enjoy some life tales with a few jokes inserted, then you should definitely go for it.

Wow, an unfunny lesbian. I’m shocked.
Just watched “Something Special.” For a “feel-good” comedy special, I’m feeling pretty awful having just heard the disturbing rabbit story. It’s a vivid and detailed telling of a creature’s death that is decidedly unfunny. If you’ve ever heard a rabbit scream, there is no humor in such distress. I actually had to leave the room.
Honest question. How did they get the members of the audience to laugh?
As funny as an orphanage on fire
