Best Spanish Horror Movies for Halloween 2023
Rapture (1979)
Also known as Arrebato, this movie has aged as fine as wine when it comes to being a spooky, scary piece. It is an art-house horror film, which typically means that you have some terrific direction and acting combined in one. This cult classic is directed by Iván Zulueta. It stars Eusebio Poncela, Cecilia Roth, Will More, Marta Fernández Muro, Carmen Giralt and Helena Fernán-Gómez. The plot of the film is iconic as it revolves around the making of a horror film and has psychedelic effects to it.

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
Titled as El Laberinto Del Fauno in Spanish, this fantasy horror is written, directed and co-produced by Guillermo del Toro. Does one need any other reason to watch this film? It is one of the most influential films out there and has received many accolades and praise over the years. The film is about a girl named Ofelia, who moves to her stepfather’s house with her mother and discovers a storage kingdom and the princesshood she is entitled to. Although the storyline isn’t the most horror-reaction-provoking, the cinematography and creatures in this film will make you think otherwise.

Julia’s Eyes (2010)
The movie is titled Los ojos de Julia in Spanish and is a horror film with a psychological twist to it which only makes it all the more terrifying. It really plays with your assumptions and the reality that we are to pursue making us do a double take and, well, don’t we all love that! The film is directed by Guillem Morales and written by Morales and Oriol Paulo.
The cast of the film includes Belén Rueda as Julia Levin/Sara, Lluís Homar as Isaac, Francesc Orella as Inspector Dimas, Pablo Derqui as Ángel, Julia Gutiérrez Caba as Soledad and Daniel Grao as Dr. Román. It revolves around Julia, who is slowly losing her eyesight when her blind twin sister Sara is found dead and has to rush to investigate the uncanny death before she goes blind.

The Skin I Live In (2011)
Marrying a melodrama to a thriller and producing a horror movie out of it is not easy but, The Skin I Live In aka La piel que habito is all about that, so you can understand the dexterity this film holds over the horror genre. It is based on Thierry Jonquet’s Mygale and silently induces a feeling of perpetual doom as you watch it.
It is directed by Pedro Almodóvar. The cast includes Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Marisa Paredes, Jan Cornet and Roberto Álamo. In this film, we meet the tortured yet brilliant plastic surgeon who is the creator of synthetic skin that cannot be damaged and, finds a woman to be his experimental subject that is from his haunting past.
Veronica (2017)
If supernatural horror is your game, then play this movie to get all those jump scares tied in with the right eerie music and cinematography. This horror film comes with a psychological edge, only making it more worthy of being a perfect Halloween watch. The film is directed by Paco Plaza and stars Sandra Escacena alongside Claudia Placer, Bruna González, Iván Chavero and Ana Torrent.
One of the scariest things about this movie has to be the fact that it is based on real-life events- the 1991 Vallecas case. The overall storyline involves a girl being possessed by a supernatural being after she ends up playing Ouija with her classmates. You can watch it on Netflix.
La Llorona (2019)
Everyone knows about The Weeping Woman, so it would be an insult to not include this modern classic in the list. A Guatemalan horror, the Spanish film is chilling in its own way as it blends interesting supernatural elements while also tackling themes of race, politics, gender and more. If you are looking to watch something that will leave you with a lasting impact, this Jayro Bustamante directorial should be on your list immediately.
The cast features María Mercedes Coroy, Margarita Kenéfic, Sabrina De La Hoz and others. In the film, we have Alma killed with her children during the Guatemala military attack. However, 30 years later she comes back for revenge on her perpetrators.
