In Zee5’s latest fantasy-thriller series, we see action, adventure and a surprising mystery that leaves policeman Yug Arya shocked. However, the series leaves a lot of questions to be answered and we discuss them right here!

Based on the popular 2016 K-drama Signal, which, in turn, is based on the 2000 film Frequency in premise. The Korean iteration stars Lee Je-hoon, Kim Hye-soo and Cho Jin-woong in pivotal roles. The Hindi adaptation has 8 episodes (till now), each with a runtime of around 45 minutes.

Plot Overview

Gyaarah Gyaarah follows a keen and talented cop, Yug Arya, whose insight into criminal profiling helps him quickly point out things from situations around him. Disillusioned by a tragic incident in the past, he is full of rage against the justice system in the country and constantly strives to do what is right for the common man.

Hours before the country puts the statute of limitations on murders to 15 years, Arya and his superior, Vamika Rawat, get into a 15-year-old cold case involving a young missing girl. The case has a personal connection with Arya, who was friends with the girl and saw the situation unfold in front of him. As they race against time to figure out the murderer, Yug comes stumbles upon an old walkie-talkie that suddenly comes to life at exactly 11:11 PM. On the other side, he finds another cop, Shaurya Anthwal, who gives him surprising insight into the case which he is looking into. In turn, he also unwittingly shares information that he has no chance of knowing.

As the connection cuts off after a minute, both men fail to realise that they are not in the same timeline, with Shaurya in 2001 and Yug in 2016. Shaurya is able to save a victim with Yug’s information changing the reality in 2016 and leaving Yug confused. Similarly, Yug is able to solve the case and put the serial killer behind bars thanks to Shaurya’s insight and information. Yug and Vamika are asked to form a specialised cold case team and they start to sift through hundreds of cases where justice was never delivered.

Does Yug Figure Out Who Shaurya is?

As the team tries to solve their next big cold case, Yug delves deeper into Shaurya’s identity but is unable to find out anything about him. As the team tries to capture a serial killer from 1990 who seems to have started their activities once more, Yug and Shaurya start to exchange information with one another. Unfortunately, in a moment of rash decision, a person is killed in custody leaving Shaurya to face severe consequences. As the murders rage on in Shaurya’s timeline, Yug focuses on a bus driver on the route on which the murders have taken place.

During this investigation, Yug finds out about Shaurya thanks to the last victim of the serial murders, who happened to be Shaurya’s girlfriend. Realising the truth, Yug frantically tells Shaurya to save her but he is too late to catch the culprit. Meanwhile, Vamika and Yug find a very important clue and realise that it’s the bus driver’s son who has been committing these crimes and his father has been keeping it all under wraps to save him. Although all hope seems lost at first, Yug and Vamika are able to prove the killer’s true identity thanks to a hairpin that Shaurya had given to his girlfriend that contained the killer’s DNA evidence.

Although Yug and Vamika celebrate delivering justice after so long in 2016, in 1990 Shaurya is left heartbroken. Yug tells him the good news but also shares that Shaurya cannot do anything but wait since DNA technology wasn’t advanced enough at that time to catch him.

What is the Relationship Between Shaurya and Vamika?

Shaurya was Vamika’s superior when she joined this job and had helped her navigate the difficult feelings associated with this dangerous and emotionally draining job. In Gyaarah Gyaarah, we learn early on that Vamika not only respected Shaurya immensely but also had a soft corner for him. However, after suddenly losing him during an investigation and no one has heard anything from him since, she is left heartbroken, hoping against hope that he comes back one day. In the present, she shares a good relationship with Shaurya’s father and regularly visits him.

What Happens in Gyaarah Gyaarah Episode 8?

In the last episode, Yug delves into an old cold case that contributed to Shaurya’s disappearance. He smells something amiss and decides to investigate, which brings out the ire of his superiors who are clearly trying to hide something. It’s clear that the department, under pressure from external parties in high positions, has done something to Shaurya when he went too close to a dangerous racket concerning a man called Shamshera. The latter was sent to prison at that time and, in 2016, got bail due to good behaviour. Once out, Shamshera kidnaps the daughter of the man whom he holds responsible for his own daughter’s death.

The police rush to find the innocent girl who is trapped in a freezer somewhere and Yug and Vamika reach the site when his daughter was accidentally shot instead of him in 1990. While Vamika rescues the girl, Yug confronts Shamshera and quickly realises that the freezer is booby-trapped. However, he is too late to alert Vamika and the truck goes up in flames, killing Vamika instantly. Heartbroken, he informs Shaurya about Vamika’s death in hopes that the former can solve the case in 1990 to stop this tragedy but Yug doesn’t tell Shaurya about his own death that might have happened thanks to the incidents of the Shamshera case.

What is the Mystery Behind the Walkie-Talkie?

We learn that the walkie-talkie specifically connects Yug and Shaurya and they are only able to talk for one minute at 11:11 PM. However, it is clear that the two cannot control when the connection will be made but it happens only when one or both of them need the other’s help with a case. However, we don’t know anything more about the walkie-talkie or why any of this is happening. It’s not clear whether there is any supernatural angle to it. Maybe the next few episodes will be able to clear that up.
