Green Mothers Club episode 1 starts with Eun-pyo in class talking about the Salieri Syndrome and the viewers quickly realise that there’s some kind of past with her and the meaning behind the Syndrome as she sees someone whom, apparently, “she stood no chance against.” We see the past and present come together as, in the present, she tries to strike over this mysterious woman’s head with a mug. That all, however, seems to be just a dream as Eun-pyo wakes up beside her son with a start.

Eun-pyo is moving to Wonderful Views and as she gets ready for the day, so do the others in her residential complex including our other protagonists in this extremely competitive mum world. As the kids get ready for school, the moms get ready to go on traffic duty for Sangwe Elementary School. The job seems to be very serious, considering how into it and serious the moms look.

A near hit-and-run later, the moms take part in a seminar where a silent but heated text exchange takes place among the various moms. Clearly, there is some huge rivalry among the different mothers who all essentially think that their kids are the best. But, as Eun-pyo later finds out in a Post-It note while moving in, it’s Yu-bin’s mother Chun-hui who is the one she should really look out for and fortunately or unfortunately, she lives right across from her.

Eun-pyo, unfortunately, has a difficult mother-in-law, although sadly, it’s because of the latter that she was able to move here. The grandmother doesn’t really want Eun-pyo to have a career and wants her to only focus on her kids’ education, which, unfortunately, Eun-pyo isn’t really interested in doing. In a later conversation with her own mother, we learn that Eun-pyo’s teaching career might just be over although we don’t know the reason yet.

The next day, after dropping her son off at school, she goes to the bakery nearby only to walk in on a fight between the shop owner and Chun-hui. She gets dragged in for no reason and gets the stink eye when she sides with the shop owner. Things get even more awkward when they get on the same elevator but Chun-hui laughs it off and tells her that she, essentially, doesn’t care. But… doesn’t she? Later, Yun-ju gives Eun-pyo the tea on Chun-hui and instructs her to not get on the latter’s bad side.

That night, Eun-pyo reluctantly buys a very expensive birthday gift for another child’s birthday party while the woman from her dreams, Jin-ha, goes off to take care of some work leaving her son Henry with the other moms. As the kids enjoy the magic show, the mothers grill the new mom in town. However, Eun-pyo isn’t someone who takes things lightly and tells the entire congregation that she isn’t, essentially, a tiger mom. Of course, everyone is pissed and they all leave her alone and sit at another table.

Unfortunately for Eun-pyo, trouble seems to follow her as her son not only disrupts Chun-hui’s daughter’s performance but also accidentally breaks her violin. The price of the violin is something that she couldn’t, in a million years, think of! Either way, an old bookshelf brings her face-to-face with Jin-ha, who, it seems, is on splendid terms with her! I’d go to the extent of saying that Jin-ha loves Eun-pyo and sees her as a close friend. However, the latter doesn’t seem all too comfortable with the situation, although, again, we don’t know why.

Eun-pyo, upon seeing pictures of Jin-ha with her husband, seems to be quite taken aback and almost… jealous? Does that mean that she had a thing for her husband? It also seems like Jin-ha is very much aware that something is up as well. However, Eun-pyo’s cagey attitude is quite uncomfortable to watch although I do fee like Jin-ha isn’t without her faults.

Either way, the next day, Eun-pyo goes to her professor to apologise and to be given a chance. Apparently, she had written something in her diary, something so bad that it cost her job. Although she gets on her knees to apologise, the professor ignores her and leaves. We then get to know what caused this unfortunate incident – apparently, her son accidentally sent out the fated journal entry which then got published. It’s heartbreaking watching the thing go down and this is the reason why you don’t give children your phones or, better yet, don’t write personal stuff on your phone.

That night, Eun-pyo wakes up with a fever and struggles to get the kids to school. Everyone around her sees it as well and while she feverishly walks to the school, a flashback shows that Eun-pyo was very much in a relationship with Jin-ha’s husband sometime when she was in France. In the present, when he walks up to her, she straight-up faints in his lap. Meanwhile, when her text doesn’t get a response, Jin-ha tears up and throws away a photo of her and Eun-pyo.

Final Thoughts: Green Mothers Club Episode 1

Well, that was action-packed! I am getting serious Reflection of You vibes from the relationship between Jin-ha, her husband and Eun-pyo. And with how that series went down, I hope this one is better.

Either way, Green Mothers Club episode 1 starts off action-packed and with lots of people to familiarise ourselves with. The tiger moms in the series are quite the spectacle to watch and very annoying as well. I am sure we’re going to have some fun with their antics. Chun-hui is, obviously, going to be a formidable foe in Eun-pyo’s path. Or is it going to be Jin-ha? We’ll just have to wait and find out.

Either way, the series is fast-paced and things just get done at neck-break speeds. Strapping myself in for this bumpy ride, although if it does turn into another Reflection of You, I will lose my mind.

Green Mothers’ Club is streaming on Netflix.
