Gold Brick Review: A Worthy Heist Film Garnished with Capitalism

Gold Brick Review: Netflix’s latest French heist film, also known as Cash, stars Raphaël Quenard as Daniel Sauveur, Igor Gotesman as Daniel’s best friend Scania, Agathe Rousselle as Virginie, and Antoine Gouy as Patrick Breuil. The film has been directed by Jérémie Rozan. It has a runtime of 1 hour 35 minutes approx.

If you like heist films, you will definitely like this one. Personally speaking, what I like so much about French films is the apt saturation I find in many of them. It makes everything look so tangible and real. It only adds to the overall execution and, more importantly, the beauty. Yes, Gold Brick is a beautiful film.

Gold Brick Plot Summary

Daniel does labor for Breuil & Sons, which transports luxury perfumes from the brands to the clients. Downtrodden and ill-paid by the Breuils, he decides to make some on his own by covertly stealing perfume from the factory and making some money. When he realizes that it won’t be possible by the usual means, he decides to go big. Bringing in Scania and making a whole team, Daniel starts making millions by stealing from his employer (Patrick Breuil, who is also Daniel’s classmate). But how long can this theft go unnoticed?

Gold Brick Review: Discussion

If you want a nice view, you have to get to the top. These words by Daniel couldn’t be truer. Behind all the events that take place in the film, there is a strong sense of capitalism and wealth disparity. But what the film also pulls off nicely is incorporating emotions while making sure that it doesn’t pull away its audiences from the message it intends to send. An affluent Chartres family controlling the “less fortunate” people of the French city becomes the backbone of the film and rightfully propels the events that follow towards the intended effects.

The anger and hateful attitude that Raphaël Quenard puts into his character (Daniel Sauveur) is commendable. He doesn’t have blood in his eyes. He doesn’t want to make the Breuils pay for something they have done because they haven’t done anything. His problem isn’t with the wealth of the Breuils but with the financial struggles that his family has to go through. All that he wants is to take from the very symbol of wealth in the only way he knows how.

Each member of the team that he gathers for the plan wants to make money. But what we, as the viewers, recognize is them trying to disrupt the wealth disparity. All this, when added to the complexity of Patrick’s character, as the son who was forced to take over his father’s empire and symbolizes the wealth that Daniel wants to steal from, gives Gold Brick a lot of gravity.

The twists, the anticipations, and the tension that comes with it make Gold Brick a definite watch. The scenes where Daniel Sauveur explains his plan have been executed in such a way that they immerse us deeper into the plot. And what’s more, we get a touch of humour as well. And there is nothing better than having humour in a film that speaks about capitalism (remembering the great Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin here).

However, the film doesn’t get heavy on your mind. So you enjoy it. It is your choice to take the film as a message on class struggle or as simple as a heist film. And the fact that you get to make that choice itself makes it a very good film.

Gold Brick Review: Final Thoughts

In conclusion, I would suggest that you watch the film because it deserves to be watched by us cinephiles. The way it seamlessly sews together different societal aspects and human emotions while keeping the eyes of the viewers transfixed on their screens is beautiful, to say the least. In my humble opinion, a worthy heist film.

Gold Brick is available on Netflix.
