God’s Crooked Lines Ending Explained: Distrust, Paranoia and Some Shocking Questions

God’s Crooked Lines (Los renglones torcidos de Dios) is a thriller film directed by Oriol Paulo and stars Bárbara Lennie, Eduard Fernández and Loreto Mauleón, alongside other cast members. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Torcuato Luca de Tena and has a runtime of 155 minutes.

Netflix’s description of the movie reads:

A PRIVATE DETECTIVE WHO CLAIMS TO BE SUFFERING FROM PARANOIA CHECKS INTO A PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL TO INVESTIGATE ANOTHER PATIENT’S MYSTERIOUS DEATH.

God’s Crooked Lines Plot

Alice Gould, while investigating a mysterious suicide in a psychiatric hospital, comes across some harsh truths which may leave her questioning everyone and everything around her.

Ok so, was Alice really mentally unstable? Although the movie toys with the idea of whether or not Alice is well or not, the last minute of the movie tells us that Alice is, in fact, not well. The person whom she thought to be Mr del Olmo turned out to be Dr Donadio. The last scene would also proves that she herself thinks that something is very wrong with what is going on and that something might be wrong with her.

Is she unstable, though? Maybe. I think the movie gives us ample proof that Dr Alvar isn’t all that great a guy and might be working with Alice’s husband Heliodoro. Who is to say that they haven’t planned this and that Dr Donadio was the one who tricked Alice at first? For me, the movie ends on a cliffhanger since we really don’t get whether the truth was presented to us or not, considering we have witnessed several similar instances of them not to turn out to be true.

What’s with the past becoming and present? The flashbacks to the past that God’s Crooked Lines shows us carefully turns out to be not the past at all. It is a little window into the future wherein we see that regardless of what happened to Mr de Olmo’s son, the scenes that we are shown have nothing to do with them.

They actually showcase Remo’s murder, something that happened thanks to Alice’s plan to escape. She lit the fire in the hospital to escape, but it turned out that her plan resulted in Romulo’s death at the hands of the Elephant Man, who had romantic feelings for their so-called sister. Thus, Alice doesn’t escape when she gets the chance and chooses to come back to the hospital in order to solve the crime.

Are Remo and Romulo Alice’s children? No, it’s definitely a figment of their imagination.

God’s Crooked Lines is streaming on Netflix.
