Girls Hostel Season 3 Review: Bland Continuation That Lacks the TVF Magic

Girls Hostel Season 3 finds the rebellious and free-spirited students of SVM Medical College, exploring the consequences of winning the presidential election. The new season stars Parul Gulati and Ahsaas Channa in the titular role and is created by Shreyashi Sharma. Moreover, Harish D Kalia serves as the director for the five-part series.

The complete cast of the show includes Simran Natekar, Trupti Khamkar, Jayanti Bhatia, Kareema Barry, Tanvi Lehr Sonigra, and Akash Chopra. Furthermore, the show is produced by Arunabh Kumar and written by Anuya Jakatdar, Alka Shukla, and Shreyasi Sharma.

The series starts with Zahira, Richa, Jo and Mili having another argument with their orthodox dean Sarla Desai (played by Jayati Bhatia), after winning their student election. The fresh season doesn’t waste a single minute in concluding that the rebellious group is far away from having an independent power and is still trapped under the clutches of the hell-bent system.

However, the timid and shy juniors have turned into diligent and welcoming seniors (definitely not my college), and are on track to establish their stronghold after defeating Ramya Mantri. Some notable bunch of freshers in the season includes a social media influencer (Kareema Berry) and a confident gender-fluid student (Tanvi Lehr Sonigra), who bears the constant trolling from the reclusive elements.

The season is high on politics and drama and also commentates heavily on gender inclusivity. Even though the show tries to represent the core problem, it ultimately ends up performing a repetitive and preachy act, that almost resembles a Twitter battle. Furthermore, Tanvi Lehr Sonigra carries the most mature and convincing performance, which is nowhere to be found in the main cast.

I have loved almost all TVF productions to date, only because of their hard-hitting reenactment of issues. Unlike a big-budget commercial extravaganza, the groundbreaking set of genius filmmakers, have the talent to successfully represent both the raw and the real. They have cracked the formula of omitting black-and-white characters and framing out the grey part of the world. And this is exactly what season 3 of Girls Hostel fails to achieve.

The season ventures in several directions, and ends up going nowhere. At one point, it was painfully hard to binge the episodes and arrive at the lacklustre finale. Moreover, I had more expectations from Mili’s character arc this season, but only found a stereotypical episode reflecting her unconvincing self-realization.

The weight of comic relief mostly lies on the Hostel Warden, who tends to ease the tension with her curious hunch and investigations. In fact, she might be the only character with genuinely great lines. Apart from that, the latest instalment of the rebellious group fails to recreate the impact of its predecessors.

The new season is a bitter disappointment which fails to find any strong ground. It tries to present an honest and inclusive picture but runs aground with preachiness. However, if you love a Hostel Warden cracking some solid one-liners then you can definitely give it a try.
