The Patient Episode 3 gave us the revelation that it was Sam’s mother, Candace at the end of the second episode of this limited series who met Alan in the basement. But, looks like the makers are following the cliffhanger-trope at the end of every episode because what they have offered us at the end of episode 3 is not only scary but also makes us wonder about a lot of other things.
The Patient is created by Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg with the executive producers being Joel Fields, Joe Weisberg, Steve Carell, Caroline Moore, Victor Hsu and Chris Long. The production companies for the series include Joel Fields Productions, Flim Flam and FXP. The main cast features Steve Carell as Alan Strauss, a therapist and Domhnall Gleeson as Sam Fortner, a serial killer and the new patient of our therapist in question.
Actors Linda Emond plays Candace Fortner along with Laura Niemi as Beth Strauss, Andrew Leeds as Ezra Strauss and David Alan Grier as Charlie Addison. Alex Rich is also part of the cast. The Patient is slated to be ten episodes long with the third episode having a runtime of 23 minutes.

The Patient Episode 3 Ending Explained
In The Patient Episode 3, we meet a new figure being introduced to the client-therapist dynamic. It is Sam’s mother, who is aware of her son’s misdeeds but, will not get him arrested. However, Alan uses Candace’s presence to host some family sessions with both Sam and his mother and, directs Sam to focus his impulse on something he loves.
As Sam claims that his mother has supported him and been good to him all the time, Alan suggests Sam think of protecting his mother every time he is overcome by the urge to harm someone. But, this never looked like a plan that would work, to begin with. Thus, it was no surprise to see Sam take someone captive at the end of The Patient Episode 3.
We see Alan wake up sometime around the night from his sleep when he hears the noise of Sam’s truck. What he witnesses after opening his eyes horrify him. Sam is seen pulling a man across Alan’s room to another room and taping him. If you are wondering who Sam has kidnapped, our best guess is on the restaurant owner he has been feeling angry for a very long time and is determined to teach him a lesson.
Apart from that, the audiences might also be wondering what must have gone so wrong for Sam to give in to his urges even after Alan found him a way to control them. Well, it very well might be that Sam is still angry at his mother for not protecting him enough. Bringing her into therapy might just have stirred some of Sam’s emotions that work against his mother which made him do what he did.
