7 Horror Kdramas That Will Send Shivers Down Your Spine
Sweet Home
Masterfully blending elements of horror and thriller, Sweet Home stands as one of the most captivating Korean Netflix series in recent memory. Cha Hyun-soo, played by Song Kang, has his world shattered when a tragic car accident leaves him an orphan — a mere high school student now navigating life alone. Seeking solace, he relocates to a dilapidated apartment with the intention of ending his own life. However, his plans take an unexpected turn as strange events unfold among the building’s inhabitants. In this nightmarish reality, the once familiar faces morph into monstrous entities, their transformation shrouded in mystery.
The show is more action and character/relationship-driven compared to my initial assumption of it focusing solely on the story itself. The plot is quite simple: people turn into monsters, and humanity has to survive. But in the midst of it, Sweet Home asks one important question: “What does it mean to be human?” and explores it throughout all the episodes. It showcases both the best and the worst sides of humanity. The other cast members of the series are Go Yoon-jung as Park Yoon-jung, Lee Do-hyun as Lee Eun-hyuk, Go Min-si as Lee Eun-yoo, and others.
Strangers From Hell
Based on the webtoon series of the same name, Strangers From Hell stars Lee Dong-wook as Seo Moon-jo, Im Si-wan as Yoon Jong-woo, Kim Ji-eun as Min Ji-eun, and others. It unfolds within the confines of a Goshiwon, a budget-friendly residential facility known for its modest amenities. Eager to secure a job offer, Yoon Jong-woo makes a daring move from his comfortable countryside abode to the bustling city of Seoul. Given the steep rental costs in the city, he opts to reside in a Goshiwon, despite its less-than-ideal living conditions. Jong-woo grits his teeth, determined to endure until he lands a job.
Little does he realise that his tenure at the Goshiwon will set off a series of events, compelling him to stay vigilant in the face of his enigmatic neighbours. The story keeps you constantly on the edge of your seat and keeps you guessing all the way through. The ominous atmosphere makes you feel like something terribly bad is going to happen any second. This drama studies the human mind in such a terrifying and fascinating way.
All Of Us Are Dead
Zombie dramas have their own fan base. You either like such gore dramas or hate them. Of course, it is the story that matters at the end of the drama. All Of Us Are Dead features Park Solomon as Lee Su-hyeok, Cho Yi-hyun as Choi Nam-re, Yoon Chan-young as Lee Cheong-san, Park Ji-hoo as Nam On-jo Yoon In-soo as Yoon Gwi-nam and others. The series centres on a group of high school students in the fictional South Korean city of Hyosan, and their struggle to survive amidst a zombie outbreak.
It is based on the webtoon of the same name by Joo Dong-geun. The best part of the series was that it showed the background story of the virus itself and how students got infected. If you are someone who loves watching zombies then this is a must-watch.
Revenant
If you’re thinking of watching a show that contains elements of mystery, horror, thriller, and pure emotion, I need you to watch this immediately! The characters are so well-structured and will keep you on your toes every episode. Revenant stars Kim Tae-ri as Gu San-young, a hardworking young woman aspiring to be a public officer, who is unwittingly possessed by a demon from another world. Yeom Hae-sang, with the ability to see demons, joins forces with her to uncover the truth behind mysterious deaths linked to five sacred objects.
Together, they enlist Lieutenant Lee Hong Sae, an ambitious police officer, in their investigation. As they navigate a world of ancient rituals, dark forces, and family secrets, they must stop the malevolent entity threatening both realms. Time is running out in this race against an unimaginable catastrophe. The other cast members of this series are Hong Kyung as Lee Hong-sae, Oh Jung-se as Yeom Hae-sang, Yang Hye-ji, and others.
The Cursed
The plot revolves around Im Jin-hee, played by Uhm Ji-won, an impassioned journalist driven by a sense of justice, who delves into the intricacies of a harrowing case entwined with Forest, South Korea’s foremost IT conglomerate. At the helm of Forest is Jin Jong-hyun, played by Sung Dong-il, a figure deeply entrenched in shamanistic practices. In the course of her inquiry, Im Jin-hee uncovers a spiritual consultancy linked to Forest, led by Jin Kyung, played by Jo Min-su.
As she unravels the enigma surrounding Forest, she encounters Baek So-jin, played by Jung Ji-so, a vessel for a possessing spirit, endowed with a unique and extraordinary ability. The story structure of the series is really well done, and everything flows together quite smoothly. Additionally, it features really interesting and likeable characters that you’ll find yourself rooting for.
The Guest
The Guest is unlike any Kdramas you have ever seen before. It’s bloody and dark and overall, just a really good horror show. Yoon Hwa-pyung, born into a lineage of shamans, discovers the malevolent demon “Son” with the power to command lesser spirits, driving them to possess vulnerable souls. These tormented vessels commit heinous acts, shattering families. Fate intertwines Hwa-pyung, devout Catholic Choi Yoon, and the determined detective’s daughter Kang Kil-yeong when their families fall victim to “Son.”
Two decades later, a resurgence of demonic horrors grips their lives. Hwa-pyung, now a vigilant taxi driver, seeks out the afflicted, extending a hand of salvation. Yoon, a formidable Catholic priest skilled in exorcism, joins the fray. Kil-yeong, a pragmatic detective, grapples with disbelief in the supernatural. The cast members of the series are Kim Dong-wook as Yoon Hwa-pyung, Jung Eun-chae as Kang Gil-young, Jim Jae-wook as Choi-yoon and others.
Kingdom
Prepare for a historical horror thriller that combines the elegance of the Joseon Dynasty with the relentless terror of the undead. Kingdom follows the story of a Crown Prince trying to unveil a sinister conspiracy, while an epidemic turns the kingdom into a living nightmare. The historical setting provides the hook for an epic journey into bygone times with stately costumes and impressive landscape shots, elaborate details and bloodthirsty butchery. The series is known for its exquisite cinematography, compelling characters, and a storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The series stars Ju Ji-hoon as Crown Prince, Ryu Seung-ryong as Lord Cho Hak-ju and others.
