Forensic is a psychological thriller film directed by Vishal Furia and stars Vikrant Massey, Radhika Apte and Prachi Desai, alongside other cast members. The movie has a runtime of 120 minutes.
Zee5 describes the movie as:
In this ZEE5 original film, little girls begin to disappear, and their bodies are found soon in the town of Mussoorie. Police officer Megha and forensic officer Johnny join hands to nab the killer.
– Forensic 2022 review does not contain spoilers –
There is a certain amount of disbelief suspension that you don’t ask your audience to do. The reason is that your audience might not come back from it and forever find themselves wandering in the dark abyss of bullcrap with no recollection of what’s going on.
But Zee’s Forensic went there and went there with all of its might.
Forensic 2022 is a very peculiar movie. I don’t know whether it’s the fact that the creators thought that the storyline is clever or if they thought that the audience is stupid but they decided that going this route with a perfectly normal, rational, believable and somewhat gripping movie was the right way to go.
The movie follows Megha, a police officer in Mussourie, and her ex Johnny, a forensic officer, as they try to solve a serial murder of little girls. The story consists of a lot of twists and turns, too much in fact, and contains some cool forensic analysis that will surprise those who aren’t into true crime.
However, the psychological thriller Forensic takes itself too far. So far, in fact, after a while you forget where you are, much like what I mentioned previously. At 2 hours, the movie is entirely too long and packed with so much information and unnecessary twists and chase sequences that it’s exhausting to keep up.
Jumping between a family drama and a thriller, you’d wish for Forensic 2022 to be the former since the leads in the movie are great actors who look wholesome together. I didn’t know I needed to see this pair in a romantic drama until I saw this phenomenon of a movie, but you gotta start somewhere.
Regardless, the movie in its last leg goes to such unbelievable heights with its twist that it’s not only shocking but entirely hilarious. It’s the worst that can happen to thrillers, honestly. If you start laughing at the absurdity of the twists being presented to you, you know you have failed with giving your audiences something engaging.
I wondered how far the movie can go with said absurdity and in the end, I realized that it went all the way to the end before finding itself lost in the wilderness. I think we would’ve benefited from a simpler script that doesn’t try so hard to stand out rather than this dumpster fire of a movie that has no rhyme or reason.
There is a limit to what you can do in psychological thrillers – just because it’s scientifically possible doesn’t mean it should happen, much less in these sequences of events. To top it off, the movie is just so boring in parts that it’s hard to keep yourself engaged. Two long and entirely unnecessary chase sequences just hang around in the midst of it for no discernible reason.
This is a remake of the 2020 Malayalam movie of the same name starring Tovino Thomas and I am yet to understand why Forensic 2022 thought that changing only the end of the previous movie to this degree was a good idea or necessary. The Malayalam movie was at least believable if nothing else. I don’t get it.
I feel the need for a do-over with these actors – it’s not fair that we see them together on screen for the first time and this is the show that we get. The sequences featuring Radhika Apte and Vikrant Massey were the most interesting, in my opinion, and their chemistry was great. Again, someone needs to make a romantic comedy happen as soon as possible.
In other departments, the dubbing was a bit off in some places and the cinematography was extremely lacklustre. I didn’t like the background score either, but Alvida was quite nice but isn’t particularly memorable in any way.
Summing up: Forensic 2022
Forensic Zee5 is a movie that tests your patience and sanity in more ways than one. It had a good story in its hand at first but just became more and more absurd as the runtime went on and at the end of 2 hours, it’s just so far-fetched that even sci-fi or supernatural horror movies will have a hard time competing for its believability factor. For a psychological thriller, that definitely isn’t a compliment.
It does have an exposition dump of various forensic processes that might interest you but to be honest, I’d much rather look for that online than go through this 2-hour hassle.
