Ex-Addicts Club Review: Comfort Series With a Cliffhanger

Ex-Addicts Club Review: The show also known as Klub Kecanduan Mantan, is an Indonesian comedy series directed by Kuntz Agus and written by Salman Aristo. The series starring Chicco Kurniawan, Andri Mashadi, Rachel Amanda, Agatha Pricilla, and Hafizh Weda, has 10 episodes, each with a runtime of 20-25 minutes.

The main cast includes Chicco Kurniawan as Kori, Agatha Pricilla as Raysa, Rachel Amanda as Tina, Andri Mashadi as Asep, Hafizh Weda as Kevin, and other notable actors like Mike Lucock, Chanceline Ebel, and Ibrahim Risyad. The Indonesian comedy series narrates the story of five friends creating a self-help group to move on from their exes.

The episode starts with Indra breaking up with Raysa, leaving her to break down at the park. After this, we’re introduced to the other three main characters, Asep, Kori, and Tina. When the neighbours wonder what these friends are on about, a guru comes and saves their day. He then does some chanting works to help the four get over their ex, but it’s evident that all four of them are too obsessed with their past lovers.

Just when they think they’re healed, news about the Guru’s arrest startles them. After discovering the fraudulent works of the Guru, the support group once again gets mad at trying to move on from their exes. Just then, a new member, Kevin, joins the group, and from then on, the support group moves ahead with its vision and mission.

Wonderful Screenplay

The episodes are short but still convey each character’s story appropriately. There are episodes specific to a character, and apart from that, we also have episodes where we get into details about the exes. The actors did a brilliant job, as their actions felt natural and cohesive. The differences between the friends portrayed by the cast are notable. The dialogues were delivered profoundly and humourous lines didn’t feel forced. The storyline is fresh, neat, and moralising.

Different Characters Without Romance Felt True

Raysa is a businesswoman, Tina is a tarot reader, Kevin is a billionaire, Asep is a barista, and Kori is a civil servant. The best part about all five of them is they try to help each other, even if some aren’t expressive. Notably, Kevin is a billionaire who isn’t very expressive, but if any one of his friends gets into trouble, he uses his wealth and makes things work out for them secretly.

Such genuine acts can be seen from each of the friends making the series pleasant. Moreover, these friends don’t seem to have romantic feelings toward each other, and that makes the theme of friendship stronger.

Locations Are Amazing

The locations chosen for the series is something to be applauded. The places looked perfect for the storyline we were receiving. As Raysa owns a cafe (where the five friends often meet up), the way the place is designed makes the series warm and comforting. Be it the series Friends or How I Met Your Father, friends meeting at a cafe or a bar has always been a cliche theme. However, it still works no matter how many times it is repeated.

Moving on, we also get to see the ceramics store of Indra, the ground where hippie singer also performs, the cult-like hospital of Ami, etc. The locations chosen looked natural, neat, and not overdone, making the series look cosier. Surprisingly, the colour-grading works are also well done, making the series looks very appealing.

Ex-Addicts Club Review: Final Thoughts

The Indonesian series is definitely a must-watch. It’s not too exaggerated or half-baked but is well-done precisely. We see the themes of friendship, romance, family, etc., added into the series that seem spontaneous.
