Euphoria Season 2 Episode 5 Recap Contains Spoilers
Euphoria Season 2 Episode 5 starts with a confrontation. We see Rue’s mother, Leslie finding out about Rue’s relapse that leads to a heated and emotional fight between the two. Gia holds witness to the disintegrating relationship between her mother and her sister. The fight essentially takes place over the location of the bag of drugs Rue had taken from Laurie. Asking her mother where the bag is, Rue loses her mind as Zendaya’s acting performance embraces us into a sharp cold slap of a spoilt, uncaring drug addict to having a complete mental breakdown that takes her into a darker place.
The drama, however, does not end when we hear Jules call out from the living room that they actually flushed all the pills down the toilet.
Unknown of Jules and Elliot’s presence in her house, Rue is embarrassed, annoyed, scared and bitter. It is revealed that after Elliot told Jules about Rue’s relapse, Jules had gone and come clean about the details to Leslie. Rue loses it when she realizes Jules is the one that ratted her out and, she behaves harshly with Jules. Rue not only says that meeting Jules was the greatest regret in her life but, also that Jules had never been there for her and only “loved being loved”, stating all the times she had left Rue in season 1.
But, this was not the only hint about season one, as Euphoria Season 2 Episode 5 mirrors the family drama and turmoil from Euphoria Season 1 Episode 2. Starting from Rue and Leslie’s fight to Rue’s complete meltdown, this episode is an ode to the other.
As the episode moves forward, we think that the family drama will take a backseat when Rue agrees to go to the ER with her mother and sister. However, midway through Rue is told that she is being taken into a rehab centre which spins out all her trauma and disdain of being sober again. She jumps out of the car and, runs to get away from her family as Gia screams in despair. Following this, the rest of the episode focuses on Rue being on the run and, to the extent she goes to, to get the money that Laurie is supposed to receive from her.
We see her knockdown at Fezco’s, only to end up trying to take pills from Faye’s drug den. Fezco being a good friend pushes her out knowing she would not be able to go through withdrawal at his place. We also see Rue ending up at Howard’s residence, primarily to use the washroom but, also tries her hand at stealing golden hoops from Lexi and Cassie’s bedroom. When she comes out, she realizes her mother is waiting for her to take her away, unable to take in Cassie’s positive approach to her situation, Rue discloses Cassie’s biggest secret- Nate Jacobs, right in front of Maddy. As the girls get into a catfight, Rue escapes her mother’s eyes.
Throughout the rest of the episode, we see Rue run, break into places and steal and, outrun the police. With the withdrawal pain kicking in, Rue somehow manages to get to Laurie’s and offers her all the jewellery and money she has stolen down the way. Even though Laurie would like to be offered cash, she takes in Rue, shares her addiction story, gives Rue a bath and some morphine before putting her to sleep. When Rue wakes up, she tries to break into Laurie’s drug storeroom but, when unable to do that, she jumps out of the window and runs into the rising dawn.
The episode ends with a knock on the door at the Bennett household, to which Leslie answers, “Rue?”
Euphoria Season 2 Episode 5: Final Thoughts
This particular episode of Euphoria Season 2 was unlike any other so far. It focuses on Rue and, only Rue. Even the Cassie-Maddy drama is cut away, when Rue escapes Lexi’s house, showing us that we stay with our narrator at all times. Levinson brings out the best in Zendaya’s Rue in this episode- her pain, suffering, addiction and, that constant hole in her heart after her father’s death. Episode 5 also holds true to what the show has always been about- how addiction can drive your life into chaos.
We get a harrowing look at what Rue is becoming when burned with withdrawal. We are haunted by her pain of missing her father. We are thrown into a moral complex, where we would like to understand Rue’s agony and anxiety but, are unable to justify her actions. Episode 5 is a beautiful tragedy of a family falling apart and, a girl lost in her own chaotic world. This episode is also by far the best the season has offered us.Instagram & Facebook to keep yourself updated with the latest news and reviews.
