Elite Season 5 Review: Nudity, Messy Romance and Hardly Any Murder Mystery

Elite Season 5 is now streaming on Netflix. Created by Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona, the Spanish teenage thriller stars Itzan Escamilla as Samuel, Omar Ayuso as Omar, Claudia Salas as Rebe, Georgina Amorós as Caye, Carla Díaz as Ari, Martina Cariddi as Mencia, Manu Ríos as Patrick, Pol Granch as Phillipe and Diego Martín as Benjamin. The new addition includes Valentina Zenere as Isadora, André Lamoglia as Iván, Carloto Cotta as Cruz and Adam Nourou as Bilal.

The latest season has 8 episodes of 45-50 minutes each with English subtitles and dubbing. The synopsis reads, “At Las Encinas, the new semester means new love triangles, new students, new rules — and a new mysterious crime.”

Netflix’s Elite Season 5 Review Contains No Spoilers

After the murder of Armando (Andrés Velencoso), Samuel and others are living with the big secret. However, Ari still has a tough time stepping out in the open like before. Principal Benjamin has imposed strict rules at Las Encinas to teach discipline to his students. There are new students in the high school who will change the characters’ lives in Elite Season 5. With a murder mystery to solve, these high school students get involved in messy affairs, orgies and extreme drama.

The fifth season of Elite doesn’t open up with a dead body in a swimming pool. If you’ve forgotten, the murder case of Armando is still unsolved. Everyone is trying their best not to spill out the truth. But circumstances don’t seem in everyone’s favour. We are in for a major twist about what really happened that night.

However, the murder mystery angle is played only at the end of every episode. Elite Season 5 on Netflix sticks to its erotic style of narration with these high school students dealing with confusion in love, lots of cheating, alcohol, wild orgies, jealousy – everything except for studying. Even Benjamin’s “strict rules” at high school can’t control these highly raging hormones.

Phillipe and Caye’s plot is stagnant. Ari, who had such a striking personality in season 4 hardly has any outstanding scenes. Omar should’ve gone with Ander as the makers have nothing to offer to his plot. Patrick and Samuel are in focus this time but their stories aren’t riveting enough to stick till the mildly shocking end.

Elite Season 5 Still 1

Season 5 doesn’t have a strong plot to keep one interested. Even if the makers added a twist in the murder mystery, it is not enough to make the new season likeable. The new couples/old flames lack the titillating chemistry for which the Netflix show is known. There are a lot of nude and raunchy sex scenes that add no meaning to the plot.

Elite Season 5 Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, Elite 5 fails to present us with a thrilling story. Too much nudity and the addition of new characters have messed up everything. The weak plot doesn’t give anyone to shine much in terms of performance. The show should have ended with season 4. The Netflix series is renewed for season 6. So let’s hope they give us a better story next time.

Elite Season 5 has too much drama and nudity but little story to tell.

  1. Sorry. The series seems to be getting worse. Seasons 1-3 were good. Interesting characters and relationships. Season 4 wasn’t as good. Seemed to be an inferior version of of the first three seasons. Season 5 is downright bad. Poor story lines that don’t make a lot of sense.

  2. “Bad” is too kind of a word. Season 5 is beyond bad. It is embarrassing. Written as if by a 10-year old child. Written for 15-21 year olds maybe. Directed and acted like a high-school play. Bad acting, over-acting. Ridiculous story-lines. Characters that change personalities every minute. (Almost) Everyone is gay. And wanting Patrick? Everyone is sexually fluid?! As soon as Ivan’s father became interested in Patrick I knew the show was “over”. And Ivan is straight, then curious, then straight, then curious, then straight, then bi. Ugh. The first three seasons had gay characters who were believable and realistic. And well-written. I hate to use the word “woke”, but it sure seems as if the writers used that word as their motto for Season 5. (Before I get flamed, I need to state that I am a gay man in my 20s)
What world is this show living in?!
Omar should have been sent away at the end of Season 4. Samuel has nothing to do but mope. Caye and the Prince are bores. Rebe is the only one with any substance, but her character is wasted. There is no humor on the show anymore. Just depressing characters. Even the cinematography is depressing; washed-out and dark. Just like the characters. Patrick and family are the worst. They ruined Season 4 and did the same for Season 5. Why do I sound so angry? Because I am. Seasons 1 – 3 were so good!!! So stylish, interesting, well-written. What happened?!?!?!?!?!
Sometimes it is best to end things on top rather then drag them out on the garbage heap.
    My rating for Seasons 1 & 2 – 10/10
    My rating for Season 3 – 8/10
    My rating for Season 4 – 3/10
    My rating for Season 5 – 0/10

  3. I seriously was hoping I wasn’t the only one.

Season 1-3 was great. Season 4, I thought they were slipping but I was still hooked from the first few seasons, and it still incorporated some of my favorite characters—though most of them had left with the end of 3. And season 5, I can barely get through it when I used to binge watch it in one to two nights.

The new characters with about every season since the 3rd hasn’t settled well with me, and maybe it’s just because it doesn’t make up most of the OG cast that were just golden in performance and had this undeniable chemistry from all sides, but also, these new characters the creators are bringing to the table, along with the storylines they are giving to the entire cast just aren’t coming across well. Everything is just made to seem raunchy and for a “sex-shock” factor for whatever reason, and the depth that the characters used to have seems lost.

I hope the next season does better but I’ve really only known series to get worse the longer they drag it out.

It really sucks though cause this has been one of my favorite series that I would share about.

  4. I stopped watching after the second episode, when I would binge watch the previous seasons. It’s just too much pointless sex scenes that add nothing to the plot. Every interaction immediately turns sexual and I found myself rolling my eyes and finding it cringey. Such a shame.

  5. Well I liked the nudity. Can’t understand the issue with nudity to be honest. And what is the problem with the sex scenes? Maybe those who have problems with sex scenes have their own issues? And yes, there is a lot of gay stuff but believe in, in Barcelona and Madrid, there are a lot of gays and a fair amount of fluidity. I have lived there for 6 years. And the young seem much more open than before. My niece is gay, my nephew is gay and my sister is going out with a woman!! So while that might not exist in many countries, this kind of acceptance and experimentation is increasingly normal in Europe. I also like Patrick funnily enough. Lots of guys at his age don’t really think much further than sex or falling head over heels for a cute guy. The storyline about his father was not that crazy. Reminded me of Ronaldo. What I found lacking was the murder plot and the whole story about the SIM card etc. It seems that the murder element is what is actually doing the series a lot of harm. We don’t need a crime every series although that is how the whole thing has been built from the beginning. And this structure is killing the series by creating completely unrealistic plot lines. How many schools have witnessed a murder every year?? It would have been much better to pursue the characters and develop their stories and follow them. Yes Omar and his parents would have been a nice continuation. I would have liked to follow some of the characters after school. Another interesting theme is the corruption of the rich ‘elite’ in Spain which does unfortunately exist as it does in many or most countries. These guys are not necessarily rich because they deserve to be. There are a lot of interesting themes in this series but yes, bad writing has spoilt things.

    • Hi,

Having nudity in shows is understandable. But when there’s hardly any story, it gets annoying. No one has an issue with gay love story. But there was no love story. The relationships just felt very random and weak. The murder mystery part, which should be the main highlight was the weakest. I hope season 6 is better than this.

  6. Well said Jake. I say this with the upmost respect as a cis woman but everyone can’t be gay. And I felt they hyper-sexualized gay people. Also Ivan dad is technically a pedophile because Patrick is a minor! Not sure where they were going with that. It’s kind of upsetting to see it go down hill since the first 3 seasons had me. But I loved everything you stated and I think it has way to much nudity and is kind of soft porn!
