Why was Cazotte obsessed with Ehrengard?
Cazotte met Ehrengard during a Royal event wherein he saw her talking about his painting of the Grand Duchess. He was taken by her thoughts on the painting as well as her beauty and was obsessed with her from then on out.
Why did the Grand Duchess hire Cazotte?
The Grand Duchess hired Cazotte with his charming and seductive powers in mind. She asked him to train her son Prince Lothar so that he would be able to charm a woman and marry her so that the throne stayed in their hands. With the Duke’s failing health, the Duchess was desperate not to let the Duke’s cousin, Marbod, take over the throne since the Prince wouldn’t be eligible to take over his father’s place without a wife. Plus, the Duchess, knowing Cazotte’s obsession with Ehrengard, used her as bait to get him to agree.
Why was hiding Lothar and his wife imperative?
When Lothar’s new wife got pregnant, they realised that she was 4 months along. If the world got to know that Ludmilla got pregnant before her marriage to the prince, it would cause a horrible scandal. Thus, to avoid the hassle and to keep everything under wraps from the Marbods, they concocted this plan to keep Ludmilla’s pregnancy progress hidden and wait for a few months until after the baby is born to announce it to the world.
Cazotte uses this opportunity to play chaperone to the Prince and his wife and takes Ehrengard with them to accompany the heavily pregnant princess. This was a ploy between the Duchess and Cazotte for him to finally “draw a portrait” of Ehrengard by making her fall in love with him.
Was Cazotte able to make Ehrengard’s portrait?
Cazotte did draw a portrait of Ehrengard, but by keeping the fact hidden from her. He spied on the woman while she took a bath every morning and drew her picture then. However, instead of finding it charming as Cazotte expected, Ehrengard found it infuriating (as she should!) and devised a plan to let Cazotte know that she does not approve of his scheming ways. In the end, Ehrengard did not give in to his “charms” and chose her fiance instead.
What was the deal struck between the Duchess and Cazotte?
The Duchess did not believe that Ehrengard would ever give in to Cazotte’s charms, and she struck a deal with him that if he got his way, he would be employed in the court permanently and would get his own residence. However, if he fails to charm Ehrengard, then he will have to sleep with her.
How did Ehrengard stop Ludmilla’s secret from coming out?
Ehrengard found out that the wet nurse’s husband has been telling everyone in his alcohol-fuelled blabbering that his wife was taken away in order to take care of a new baby in the castle. Marbod heard this and planned to expose the family in order to take the throne into his own hands. However, Ehrengard concocted a plan to let Matthias try to take the royal baby as planned by the Marbods and, during the picnic, when they all saw Matthias running with the baby, with Lisbeth close behind him, Ehrengard used the situation in her favour and told everyone that it is her and Cazotte’s baby.
Since there was no way to prove otherwise, the Marbods had to leave in a huff, with their plans foiled. Unfortunately, Ehrengard’s fiance Kurt was also in the midst of all this and challenged Cazotte to a duel in which Cazotte shot himself in the foot. In the end, Cazotte never got Ehrengard and had to sleep with the Duchess in accordance with the bet that they had.
How did Cazotte become Casanova?
It’s a mystery – Cazotte was apparently very charming with women, although we only see him to be a voyeuristic manipulator who did not think women had the choice of saying no to his proposals and he could get whomever he wanted. Although it was surprising how taken the Duchess was with him, and afterwards, we see other women ogling him at the opera in Rome. However, it’s a mystery how he was termed as charming and seductive because he was none of those things.
