Earthstorm Review: Disruptive Forces of Nature and Effect of Climate Change

Earthstorm is a science and nature documentary series, released on Netflix on 27th October 2022. It is a Wall to Wall Media production and has four episodes total, with a runtime of about 42-49 minutes. The series is executive produced by Jeremy Dear and Tim Lambert.

The documentary series is based on the disruptive forces of nature and their consequences on human life. The series is a pool of footage of hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and earthquakes that have ravaged human life with their course.

-Earthstorm Review Contain Some Spoilers-

The first episode of the series is about Tornadoes, where daring storm chasers risk their lives to study, document and provide inside looks at the raw power and devastation of tornadoes across the U.S. A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from the base of a thunderstorm down to the ground. And as seen in the footage, Tornadoes are capable of completely destroying well-made structures, uprooting trees, and hurling objects through the air.

Tornadoes occur most frequently in North America, particularly in central and southeastern regions of the United States colloquially known as Tornado Alley. There are almost 200 tornado formations in the US alone every year and 4 times the number if we combine the whole world. These vortexes of air are also a source of fascination for many people who chase these fatal phenomena.

We get to see how the El Reno tornado, a large and powerful tornado occurred over rural areas of Central Oklahoma. This rain-wrapped, multiple-vortex tornado was the widest tornado ever recorded. This also caused the death of some storm chasers who couldn’t get out of the approaching storm in time and lost their lives.

In the second episode, from Iceland to Italy, experts take an in-depth look at four imposing volcanoes, each bigger, deadlier and more explosive than the last. There are about 1300 active volcanoes on Earth and the episode takes a deep look into four of them, which could cause massive destruction if erupted.

The first one was the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland, which started erupting on March 19, 2021, and erupted for six months. Although the eruption is finished, it’s still stunning to see the new lava fields and craters created by the eruption up close. It is also called a tourist eruption as many people go there to witness the lava flow.

The second one was the Cumbre Vieja an active volcanic ridge on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain. The latest eruption began on 19 September 2021 in a forested area of Las Manchas, which reached populated areas downslope and destroyed many properties. The third one was the Masaya Nicaragua volcano, which is actively studied by scientists to predict its next eruption.

Campi Flegrei is the last active four-mile-wide sunken super volcano, which could destroy the whole country if erupted. The third episode delves into earthquakes and tsunami that is also caused by them. Harrowing accounts of earthquakes and tsunamis in Los Angeles and Japan hone in on looming threats in the hotbeds of the earth’s seismic activity.

The last episode is about Hurricane Ida in particular, as a closer look at the ravaging effects of Hurricane Ida in 2021 reveals how rising global temperatures are pushing storms to grow more powerful than ever.

This eye-opening documentary covers the devastating aftermaths of natural disasters like volcano eruptions, tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes. The first-hand accounts of the people who record these phenomena or the survivors make you think, how fragile human life and man-made things are in the face of mother nature.
