As we saw in the film, Gonkers runs away when Fielding and his friend Nate were hiking along the Appalachian trail, talking about how his parents are disappointed in him and his lack of career choices. He comes back home at night when he isn’t able to find him and seeks help from his parents, who set up a whole plan to find him at any corner of their state.
While John and Fielding set out to trek along the trail, putting out fliers for their missing dog. His mother Jinny tries to contact every dog shelter and reporter to get the missing dog advertisement printed. Along with searching for Gonkers, she gets reminded about her own dog Oji, whom he had as a child.

Her parents weren’t fond of Oji but she loved him dearly and one day when she comes home, he is nowhere to be found. It turns out that her dog ran out and met with an accident, from which he couldn’t make out. It had left Jinny heartbroken and decided not to have another dog again. Until Gonkers showed up but now he is lost too.
Meanwhile, Fielding and John are looking for him at every place, approaching unlikely strangers, which they call getting out of the bubble. They often get surprised too when they see others are also with them, looking for Gonkers. Their story becomes popular as many news outlets put out an article about a dog with Addison’s disease who needs his medicine within 20 days or he won’t make out.
From 20 days, they come at 15, 10 and even fewer remaining days till Gonker can hold out. They even take help from another dog named Yuri, to search for him or to see if Gonker would come smelling Yuri. But to no avail, however, Fielding’s condition is getting worse. He is not able to eat or sleep properly, he is even spitting out blood and moreover, he is keeping it all a secret.

At last, they get a call from a shelter that says that they have found the exact dog and they rush to get him, only to find another dog with Addison’s disease. At this point, John decides to get back home as Fielding is also not looking good. There Peyton calls him up to ask how he has been and gets to know about his painful situation and degrading health.
As Fielding gains the courage to share about his condition, Marshalls get another call about sighting Gonker at Evergreen Lodge in West Virginia. Hoping it isn’t another false claim, they go out there and call out for him. Lo and behold, he does come running to Fielding and eventually goes back home. But Fielding faints while getting off the car and is rushed to the hospital.
Turns out he had Ulcerative colitis and was found at the right time before it became even worse. While Fielding recovers in the hospital, Gonker is smuggled into his room secretly and we get to know at the end of the film, that the real-life best friends never got separated again. Fielding eventually worked in Chile, giving nature tours.
