Doctor Cha Episode 4 Recap
If the last episode was a rollercoaster for Cha Jeong-suk, this episode takes it a step forward. Now that one of the seniors is suspicious about Jeong-suk’s relationship with Jung-min, they have tried to be even more discreet. So, even though all three of the family members are together in the restaurant, they will all go home separately. To rub it into her husband’s face, Jeong-suk hitches a ride with Roy Kim, who has a fancy bike.
The duo have a conversation about her relationship with the family. While he doesn’t agree with her opinions about love and respect, he upholds them because he values her judgement. Meanwhile, Jung-min is hooking up with the senior who keeps yelling at him, and his mother thinks she is bullying him, which should stop. The next morning, Jeong-suk brings gimbap for her son, but the senior eats all of it, really getting on Jeong-suk’s nerves.
She asks Jung-min to stay away from the senior, especially since she yelled at his mother because she didn’t do one thing right. To be fair to Jung-min, he did try to say something to the senior resident, but she was pretty adamant about her position as a person who can impart judgement on people. Jung-min decides to give up on this argument for his personal sanity, but he hasn’t escaped because while Jeong-suk is great at socialising with Roy and the other residents, she is still new to the craft.

Thus began the long day of Jeong-suk calling her son for help at every challenging cross-road. Naturally, he was annoyed because he had been pelted from all areas. When he expresses this concern to her, she takes it too personally, and he reassures her that she can always take lessons online and watch videos demonstrating how each step goes. Thankfully, he decided to send her a video and get it started, which helped her immensely with the new patient.
Hitting a small snag with the chest tube, she tries asking every single one of the residents and the department chiefs for help, but they are busy doing their own surgeries. Desperate, she calls her husband, but he is annoyed that people may figure out something is happening between them. Jeong-suk is not ready to listen to this lame excuse because she gets him to come down to the patient instantly. However, he is unable to put the chest tube inside and eventually, the senior resident has to wrap it up for him.
While this was about technical difficulties, there are times when her patients refuse care just because they just don’t want the embarrassment, while other times it is because there is nothing better in this life. The idea is to find a way to convince these people that they should get treatment. Speaking to Roy Kim about this, she finds that maybe she can use her abilities to relate to people and maybe convince them to get some care.

Changing the subject, he asks her what she will be doing on her day off, and she explains that she will be spending time with her family. When she returns the question, he replies that he will go to find himself. Which sounds pretentious as hell, but actually, he went to the catholic orphanage where he grew up and found out that his family probably left him. This crisis begets another at Jeong-suk’s place as she finds a receipt for a bracelet in her husband’s pocket. After probing him, he lies and says that it’s her early birthday gift.
While he may have escaped from this confrontation, he doesn’t know what is coming because Jeong-suk goes to Seung-hi to apologise for her behaviour in college, and we can see the bracelet on full display. Fortunately, that was not the moment she noticed the bracelet. It worsens because when she tries to resuscitate one of her difficult patients, she already feels like she is losing. The moment the resident puts the defibrillator, she puts her hands too and gets an electric shock, passing out on the floor. But not before she saw the bracelet glinting off Seung-hi’s hand.
Doctor Cha Episode 4 Review
This episode was kind of a filler, but the ending truly made it amazing. We are seeing the highs and lows of the protagonist while the other characters are going through their own main-character moments. Especially the husband. Moreover, this episode was also quite a good indication of how people may have expected her character to be good immediately because even when women break the glass ceiling, they are expected to be exceptional, unlike men, who can be mediocre at their job.

While most K dramas are really good at exploring back stories, this one shows why the genre works so well for the long-form storytelling format. They are great at building some context, and how that affects the main storyline, it saves a lot of main-character energy from the protagonist and holds them accountable for their transgressions.
