Dining With the Kapoors Review
Netflix’s new special is part intimate family gathering, part legacy tribute, and part food-soaked storytelling that delves deep into the Kapoor clan’s memories, relationships, and cinematic history. One of the sweetest aspects of the film is how chaotic and natural it feels. The members joke, tease, and reminisce in a genuinely wholesome way that anyone can relate to their own families, albeit, of course, only touching on the good parts.

The film is visually appealing, and the dining setup screams carefully designed. From beautiful lighting and earthy tones to polished close-ups of delicious food, the film knows what to focus on and how. Thus, viewers who need something light-hearted this weekend will have a swell time, as it looks so pretty all around that it’s hard to stop watching for the most part.

The film also delves into the legacy and nostalgia of the Kapoor family in Bollywood, and the strong emotional thread tied to Raj Kapoor’s legacy is apparent in every scene. For fans of these actors, this will bring something interesting to watch in a familiar, intimate setting, and that makes it all the more impactful. I also think that the chaotic vibe is intentional, and it helps in keeping the show more relatable. The heartfelt conversations don’t feel manufactured, and the light-hearted banter flows easily. Of course, these are trained actors, so manufacturing intimacy isn’t new here, but the audience feels nothing but the good vibes, and that’s great.
Either way, the problem that I find with shows like these is that it’s clearly not organic because what family sits down at a dinner table having sweet banter while there are cameras pointed at you? Just the concept of that is bizarre, and once that thought gets in your head, you can see through the fun and laughter to the production side of things. I guess it’s enjoyable if you don’t think too deeply into it, but these shows generally don’t feel believable in that sense, and they miss the raw aspect of a documentary.

Another obvious problem with it is that we only listen to the fluffy good parts of the Kapoors and nothing beyond that. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with that concept, but there’s inherently nothing new to watch here because, well, everyone already knows all the good stuff. And that doesn’t necessarily mean that there has to be some conspiracy hanging in the air, but it doesn’t add anything to our lives in any way. The narrative is shallow, and the focus on a more celebratory, legacy-focused narrative doesn’t bring out much curiosity for anyone.
With all that in mind, though, Dining With the Kapoors is mostly an ode to Raj Kapoor and his legacy. Fans of the actor and producer will find themselves enthralled in the stories and will have a smile on their faces for most of the runtime. Although there are some out-of-touch moments, it’s the stories that make the impact. Is it relatable as a whole? Not really. But, I guess, it doesn’t really have to be, regardless of how hard it tries to do that.
Final Thoughts

Dining With the Kapoors is an aesthetic and enjoyable watch for anyone who needs something light and forgettable. It focuses on all the good, nostalgic stuff while keeping anything remotely interesting under lock and key. That is to be expected, but so are our disappointments!
