Devotion a Story of Love and Desire: To whom do we owe our fidelity?
Netflix’s latest series feels a lot like Hagai Levi’s Scenes from a Marriage, starring Jessica Chastain and Oscar Issac aired back in 2021 on HBO. Even though the Netflix show’s foundation of a relationship and, what breaks it, stands differently than HBO’s one, they both truly deal with the same topic of love, marriage, happiness, infidelity and more.
In Devotion a Story of Love and Desire, we meet Carlo and Margherita- a couple where the former is a professor & writer and, the latter a real estate agent. From the start, we really don’t find anything amiss in their relationship. There is passion, support and understanding. But, is there love and happiness? This big impending question is later on played and reflected over by our protagonists. With both Carlo and Margherita giving into their instinct and desire, they threatened to be torn apart.
The impending doom of this relationship and, what happens when a marriage starts showing crack is beautifully replicated in this miniseries.

Cinema has always been liberal in exploring the roots and causes of infidelity. Some recent releases like Amazon Prime Video’s Gehraiyaan also touches on this aspect deeply along with other things. Then, what makes Devotion a Story of Love and Desire stand out?
At the beginning of the series, we hear Carlo teach his students the art of exploring their imagination and writing stories. During this class, he mentions, “To whom do we owe our fidelity? To others or ourselves?”. This quote forms the basis of this story. Carlo and Margherita have the perfect relationship until they aren’t happy anymore which leads them to pick different partners by cheating on their married ones. But, is this justified? Isn’t it infidelity if we cheat ourselves of the happiness we deserve? Or, is it justified to sleep with someone else while in a committed relationship?
The series circles around these questions and much more, in regards to cheating, betrayal, how dreams come before people and, how people take others for granted. Netflix’s miniseries delves deep into the nitty-gritty of relationships and, shows us that the world is not black and white but, there is a whole of grey painted on every hallway of life we walkthrough.
