As per the comics, Dane is Marvel’s third Black Knight. He is the nephew of the villainous Black Knight Nathan Garrett. Dane had wanted to utilise his scientific knowledge alone to do good initially. However, when the mutant villains were thought to be lost in space, his scientific studies using magnetism to look for extraterrestrial life accidentally brought Magneto and Toad back to Earth.

Magneto began re-forming his Brotherhood right away, kidnapping Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch as a first step. Whitman dressed as the Black Knight and went on the hunt for Magneto but was met by the Avengers, who mistook him for his uncle. The Black Knight assisted the Avengers in getting back on track, but he eventually parted ways, irritated by their scepticism.

About his character, the Eternals actor told Inverse, “I did the reading on him and I quickly forgot about it as soon as I can. None of that stuff’s real. What’s real is this movie, and who he is in this movie. He’s just Dane Whitman, at the Natural History Museum.”
