Curse of the Seven Seas Review
In Curse of the Seven Seas, viewers feast on several supernatural sequences from its first minute, mostly because Ardi’s family can’t stop touching random things left on the roads. Considering the supernatural lores in Indonesian culture, one would assume that Ardi’s family will be able to understand curses and whatnot a bit quicker but that’s not the case here.
Ardi has his third eye randomly open while his father Sucipto gets cursed after he touches a weird object on the road not once, but twice. In all this, however, the biggest sin is probably the terrible CGI which not only isn’t scary but laughably silly. The monster which is apparently terrorising the family is just so silly that it’s hard to keep a straight face or take any of this seriously, at any point. There are moments when the film feels like a test of patience, showcasing random spirits around every corner. I wonder why this was necessary considering the low budget — have one good monster and scare us with that.

The lack of logic doesn’t help and viewers will find themselves resenting these people for their colossal lack of decision-making capabilities. In what ordinary universe does a normal, healthy man cough up maggots and an ungodly amount of blood at the breakfast table? I am confused about why they don’t make alternative decisions when it comes to this, considering they believed their son had opened their third eye. It just doesn’t make sense — why do you believe one and not the other?
Either way, the pacing is also a bummer in this film and bores you by quite a bit because it takes forever to get from one thing to the other. Plus, again, whatever gruesome death we see seems to not follow a lot of logic. I also wonder why the authorities didn’t take an interest in Arif’s horrifying death which feels more like murder. There’s also hardly any emotional connection for the viewers to latch on to. The characters are written without any depth and their interactions with each other similarly feel soulless. This also spills on to their interactions with the horror elements. No one really sells the terror of coming across a scary entity or when someone gets cut up from the abdomen.

It’s also just plain stupid. Generic, forgettable and logic-less, the film’s characters are so one-dimensional and brainless that it becomes painful to see. It doesn’t provide a reason for characters to act a certain way, they just do it because the plot requires it. The plot doesn’t follow naturally and it feels like a string of generic horror elements one after another. This is one of those new movies on OTT that will leave you disappointed.
Final Thoughts

This fight of the shamans is quite silly and devoid of logic. Curse of the Seven Seas has terrible CGI and leaves you disappointed from start to end. The lack of depth of the characters is its biggest weakness but the stupidity of the story isn’t far behind.
