Catching Killers Season 3 Review: Gritty Tales of Horror Unfold in a Formulaic Fashion

Catching Killers Season 3 Review: The latest season of Catching Killers has premiered on June 23, 2023, on Netflix. Executive produced by Louise Norman and John Ownes, the show is directed by Ian Clark and produced by Anastasia Arsan. The show follows the horrific tales of how the police, detectives and the FBI caught some of the most notorious serial killers and murderers with their utmost collective effort.

The show consists of four episodes of real life events which happened in the early late 1900 to early 2000s in the United States. Each episode has a runtime of approximately 40-45 minutes each.

-Catching Killers Season 3 Review Contains No Spoilers-

If you are expecting anything different from this series than the million other true crimes out there, you are in the wrong place. Yes, it is bone-chilling and will give you an instant adrenaline rush if you are one of the maniacs who watch true crimes for “comfort” which is exactly why production companies keep funding such projects. It might definitely be a tad bit difficult to watch for some for the graphic details (there are no graphic images) and sudden emotional outburst by the narrators of the stories who are clearly still shaken up about it.

To the investigators and the officers, these instances are not just mere cases for them but it affected them on a personal level. Some of them abruptly ended up in tears just talking and looking back at the past scenarios. As viewers it does make us think about how difficult it must be for the authorities to deal with psychos and sociopaths which inbuilds a great sense of respect for their undying efforts to bring victims to justice.

Moreover, it is interesting to witness how the police solved crimes in the early 2000s with very little technological developments. It is hard to imagine how a criminal is caught with no CCTV camera footage or phone records and mainly relied on tips and clues from the public and media. The stories are narratated in such a detailed manner that you cannot help but totally immerse yourself and little do you know after a few minutes you are completely invested in the tales of crime.

Catching Killers Season 3 still 1

Although the stories are interesting, it follows a routine storytelling process of archive footage, mysterious camera angles and dramatic music. However, after watching each episode you will be left with a satisfactory feeling of every assailant getting caught at the end as the title suggests. The accounts of the incidents are one sided as we do not get an insight of the motives and intentions of the criminals (except in episode 3) behind the henious crimes.

The one episode that truly managed to shake me to the core is the forth one involving the DC sniper who shot multiple people at daylight. The killings were so spontaneous yet calculated which leaves us with multiple questions and no definite answers. Either way, the series shows the side of the ones on field and gives them an opportunity to retell the gruesome events in their own words.

Catching Killers Season 3 Review: Final Thoughts

It is a typical true crime series which contains gun-wrenching real life accounts of people falling victims to horrifying crimes. It contains everything to make it irrestable, the drama, emotions and a stone-cold killer. Another bonus aspect of the show is that the episodes are not too long and filled with limited yet important details of the cases. It is definitely a must watch for the ones who frequently watch such content and even if you are unfamiliar with the genre, this series can be a good start.
