Breaking and Re-entering Review: “Reverse” Heist Comedy is Delightfully Unhinged

Taiwanese heist-comedy film Breaking and Re-entering, also known as 還錢, drops on Netflix on August 01, 2024. However, this isn’t just another action film where a bunch of skilled delinquents try to steal money from someone rich. Rather, we have a group of people trying to pull off a reverse heist in which they try to put the one billion dollars that they have stolen back into a bank vault when the leader of the group finds out that his ex-girlfriend is being framed for their crimes. Of course, insanity ensues.

There’s an onslaught of heist comedy films these days and most of them have been not quite up to the mark. Breaking and Re-entering follows a lot of the same points that you’d see in these movies but there’s something refreshing here that sets it apart and stops it from being completely repetitive and thoroughly boring. The movie is gooey and light-hearted, making it a delightful and stylish watch. Moreover, the chemistry between the characters, especially Chen Bo-lin and Cecilia Choi, is impressively cute and you can’t really look away from the screen for a minute.

The storytelling and the background score play a huge part in making this movie light and charismatic, just like its silly characters. The music is so fun and fast-paced, keeping you hooked to the story while the story is told in a quirky and stylish manner such that it makes things feel relatable and interesting. The storyline itself is extremely convoluted and entirely unnecessarily complex but it’s the storytelling that keeps things fresh and interesting, so much so that you can’t help but be entertained. The silliness and sheer insanity are delightfully unhinged and the way we check and recheck the plans and actions are really humorous.

Shun Shu-wen and Chang Po-chun’s relationship forms the basis of this movie, so much so that the heist becomes the secondary aspect sometimes. And that’s all well and good – everyone loves a gooey romance in the middle of the fast-paced madness. The movie’s focus on romance is a good choice because it is done well and the two actors have great chemistry to hold onto our undivided attention. Chen Bo-lin’s charisma in this movie is unparalleled and he plays Po-chun realistically, such that you root for him and his mission. On the other hand, Shu-wen, the headstrong ex who is getting framed for the crimes, is sweet but ruthless, a combination that can never go wrong. The scenes that they share together give you butterflies as you watch them come closer as the runtime goes on.

That being said, even the other characters are thoroughly charismatic and delightful to watch. Whether it be Wu Kang-ren’s corrupt and spoilt Chen Hai-jui or the other members of the heist group – the movie’s characters are delightfully unhinged and thoroughly entertaining in every frame. Even antagonist Hai-jui is funny and Kang-ren, who is a delight in every movie he is in, plays him so well that you smell something fishy the moment he comes on screen. On the other hand, the other members of the group, including Frederick Lee’s Uncle Ben, Kent Tsai’s Kao and JC Lin’s Wen-hao are equal measures of cute and thoroughly skilled at their jobs, making them a delight to watch as well.

Okay, let’s talk about the heist… or reverse heist. As mentioned previously, the idea is a little convoluted but the execution is so well done that you don’t really mind it. Things, of course, go wrong as they seldom do in these movies, but it’s so well done that you don’t mind the repetitive nature of the sequences. For example, a gag with the automatic doors in the midst of the gang trying to escape the bank comes out of nowhere and is so surprising that it made me laugh out loud. It’s not new or unique, honestly, but the actors do such a good job that it really tickles your funny bone. The heist sequence is also light and entertaining and thus the complications take a backseat because you end up enjoying the loops that the movie goes through to put its point across.

Delightfully unhinged and full of gooey romance, this “reverse” heist comedy is a great watch for anyone looking for nonstop light-hearted entertainment. The storyline is a bit much but the execution is so well-done that you can’t help but love the stupidity of it all.
