The storyline then shifts six weeks earlier, portraying Lyle preparing for driving lessons with Slim, a middle-aged man with a criminal past. Slim, who advised Eli to correspond with Alex Bermuda, an incarcerated prisoner, is also a friend of Lyle, Eli’s stepfather.
Whenever Frankie and Lyle are absent, Slim takes care of Eli and his non-verbal brother, Gus, who has been mute since a car accident at the age of seven. While Gus remains silent about his past trauma, Eli maintains a regular exchange of letters with Alex Bermuda, who reciprocates by sharing insights into prison life and offering advice on dealing with bullies. Eli consistently faces challenges in his life, contending with bullies at school and grappling with difficult decisions. In dealing with bullies, Eli adheres to Bermuda’s recommended strategies—opting for acceptance and avoidance rather than confrontation. However, his plans go awry when his stepfather is kidnapped, and his mother is arrested for four years. Determined to create a decent life for them after his mother’s release, Eli resolves to save money. Meanwhile, he nurtures a passion for writing, aspiring to become a journalist.
In the last episode, Eli secures a job at the Newspaper company by selling Alex Bermuda’s life story, although he is initially tasked with writing light-hearted pieces. When Gus and Shelly are announced as Queensland Champions for their charitable work, Eli seizes the opportunity to delve deeper into Tytus Broz. Tytus, who will be presenting the award, becomes the focus of Eli’s investigation.
Caitlyn, suspicious of Tytus due to Bich Dang’s lawyer revealing years of payoff, collaborates with Eli. They contact Raymond Leary, who discloses that Tytus commissioned him to build a secretive facility on his property. Despite their initial encounter at the facility, Eli and Caitlyn managed to evade Kroll’s clutches, employing quick thinking and Caitlyn’s resourcefulness with a fire axe, which inflicted a wound upon the pursuer. The pursuit unfolded, culminating in a dramatic climax at the Queensland Champion award ceremony, where Tytus was delivering a speech. In a shocking turn of events, Eli disrupted the ceremony by brandishing Lyle’s head, a macabre revelation that led to Tytus’s arrest by the police. However, amidst the chaos, Ivan Kroll reappeared on the scene. His violent retribution included slashing Robert’s throat, stabbing Eli, and initiating a perilous chase up the clock tower, mirroring a disturbing vision previously foreseen by Gus.

After losing a significant amount of blood from a stabbing incident, Eli and his father are urgently rushed to the hospital. As Eli regains consciousness in the hospital, he experiences a dream where Tytus roams the corridors, passing by a ringing red phone. In the dream, Eli seizes a scalpel, opens a door, but the ringing abruptly stops, jolting him awake. To his surprise, Caitlyn is sitting beside him, holding a newspaper.
Caitlyn reveals that the newspaper has chosen Eli to cover the entire story of Tytus, marking his official induction into the world of crime journalism. Simultaneously, there’s a palpable connection between Eli and Caitlyn, suggesting the beginning of a romantic relationship. Back at Eli’s home, the family has come together, with Eli’s father, after surviving the stabbing, confessing his love to Eli’s mother. The narrative concludes with the entire family finding happiness together. Eli, reflecting on the events, puts pen to paper, expressing that this newfound life is the happiness he had always yearned for, and he has finally achieved his desired state of contentment.
