Oh, it seemed like you had left us! Attack On Titan Season 4 Part 2 Episode 8 features the return of Levi and Hange, perhaps the biggest wildcards of this season. Let’s see what they plan to do in this review!
Attack On Titan Season 4 Part 2 Episode 8 Overview

What more is there left to be said about Attack On Titan? Even if you only consider yourself a casual anime fan, this show is probably one that you know about and watch avidly. It is an action and supernatural show based on the works of Hajime Isayama. It is known as Shingeki no Kyojin in original Japanese, and thus this half of the season is also called Shingeki no Kyojin Season 4 Part 2. You can also call it Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2 or Shingeki no Kyojin Final Season Part 2 if you’d like.
This season is being animated by Studio MAPPA, a powerhouse studio behind several immensely popular anime properties, including Jujutsu Kaisen and the future Chainsaw Man. This season is directed by Yuiichirou Hayashi, with Jun Shishido serving as the chief director of the show. The duo was also in charge of Part 1 of the final season, alongside several other acclaimed anime such as Kakegurui and Hajime no Ippo. You can find our review of the previous episode right here.

The latest outing by the biggest show on the (anime) block was a weird one. On the one hand, the same quality that you usually see on this show was exceedingly obvious here as well. The episode’s tone was what it should have been, and the plot also moved forward by doing all the right things. However, this was by far the weakest episode of this season. To explain why, we are going to have to veer into spoiler territory, but only a little bit.

You see, coincidences have their places in storytelling, and they can be an effective tool for a writer. However, they have their time and place, and four episodes before the end of a multi year-long saga aren’t the right places for coincidences. For an anime that has usually believed in long builds and subtle storytelling in the past, not only do coincidences feel out of place but really out of character. Mind, the ones here weren’t that big of a deal, but they were extremely noticeable here.

Annie’s return has been significantly more low-key than anyone would have imagined it to be, and I don’t know how to feel about that. On the one hand, her knowing everything that’s happening through Hitch is extremely smart and good writing, but everything else about her character doesn’t make any sense in the context of this all-important war. One of the coincidences that we talked about in Shingeki no Kyojin Final Season Part 2 Episode 8 involved her, and it stuck out like a sore thumb.

The long-awaited arrival of Levi and Hange was great, but they aren’t really in a condition to make a huge difference in this war yet. That needs a bit more time to stew, time that we don’t appear to have anymore. They have involved all the other underused characters on their side as well, and while their motives are still unclear, the alliance makes sense on paper and puts some doubt on the efficacy of Eren’s well thought out plan.

The element of Connie’s emotional betrayal is also resolved in a rather nonchalant manner, as Gabi and co. continues to gain more ground in the show for whatever reason. If Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2 Episode 8 told me anything, it’s that enough time might not be left for the show to resolve all of its plot elements. If that does turn out to be the case and we have an Attack on Titan– The Final Movie after this season ends, you are all free to blame it on me for manifesting it. Yelena continues to lead us to some amazing faces, as the production was still impeccable. Right now, everything rests upon the narrative.
Verdict
Attack On Titan Season 4 Part 2 Episode 8 felt like a slightly rushed outing done to fill the gap between the elements at the end of the series and the show’s world. It was still an entertaining watch, but it was missing the polish the show usually has.
