His world shifts when he meets Max, a bold and anarchic young woman who introduces him to a life of risk, rebellion, and deception. As Simon gets pulled deeper into her chaotic orbit, he discovers the cost of straying too far from the life he once knew. An Honest Life Review

The movie depicts the life of a young man who wanted to do something big in his life, but strayed from his path pretty early in the film. When you see Simon and hear his ideals, you already know that he does not belong in the place he is desperately trying to fit himself in. He gets the chance to study law at the prestigious Lund University, but that does not matter to him because this was never his intention or passion in the first place. Writing was his dream, but as he lacked inspiration, he chose to go for a life that he thought would at least give him success.
Things start off pretty well for him as he takes all the correct steps that he would need to survive in a capitalist society; however, one encounter with Max changes not only his career trajectory but also his future. At its core, An Honest Life is a story about a man caught between worlds, uncertain of where he truly belongs.

Simon doesn’t fully align with the elite class or the anarchists he becomes involved with, and this in-betweenness becomes prominent in his journey. Through his eyes, the film offers a subtle critique of both ends of society, revealing their flaws and disillusionment present in each. Though one is not better than the other, the side with Max is clearly the worst choice that Simon willingly accepts.
As a social commentary, An Honest Life doesn’t quite hit the mark. It tries to show society in black and white, without much depth or nuance, which makes its message feel a bit one-sided. But as just a medium of entertainment, the movie does keep you somewhat engaged from the beginning to the end. You empathise with the hero, but at the same time, feel how blatantly foolish his decisions are. It’s obvious that all his faulty judgments mostly stemmed from his indecisiveness.

This movie also says that it is a thriller; however, that aspect only comes alive in some sequences, and that too towards the latter half of the story. Throughout the movie, everything that the protagonist does makes very little sense, hence you do not really relate to his downfalls. Even the romantic relationship that was showcased does not bloom very well because, as the audience, we already know it is being established purely on manipulation.
Verdict

All in all, this is a grim and desolate movie that is visually beautiful but leaves you feeling hollow and dejected. If societal discrepancies and a portrayal of bitter reality are something you enjoy, you can check it out, but it was not really my cup of tea.
