The moment the special starts, we know exactly what it will be about. Interacting with the audience is the perfect way to begin a special. It becomes the crux of the whole show. It becomes the recurring joke that keeps the attendees hooked. Amy Schumer has essentially created a special experience at every location, and it comes through in this recording. Her humour is not deadpan, but it does come with a dryness that makes the world’s cynicism seem cool.

Using maturity and age for humour has been an old tool. However, the way this comedian makes use of it makes older women seem cool and ambivalent to all the world’s pettiness. She has created a persona that is so above the other people in the audience. It is captivating. While her jokes may not be that funny, the confidence she carries herself with is enough to get people to enjoy her stories. However, there are moments when popular culture references are accurately used to elicit a response.

Speaking of her humour, some of it relies on body autonomy and body perception. She manages to tackle something like this with grace and enough sensitivity, but that could be attributed to the fact that these storylines only lasted a few seconds before she moved on to something else. She has spoken of body issues in detail before when discussing Ozempic, the drug that many members of Hollywood have been using to lose weight.

However, it was interesting to see her being incredibly honest about her journey as a person who has dealt with something like this. The comedic timing, the punchlines and the story structure are extremely indicative of the sketch comedy genre. Considering Amy Schumer’s stint at Saturday Night Live (SNL), this is truly giving some flashbacks of that time. Her acting is brilliant, and her ability to rope in the crew as well has been the icing on the cake.

The medium is the message, and the way she employed the medium has been interesting, but that still doesn’t translate well when it comes to her jokes. Some of her stories are emotional and hard-hitting in terms of the laugh-out-loud meter. The rest of her performance felt like listening to a friend talk about their day. While they are also incredibly funny, it doesn’t generally necessitate a burst of boisterous laughter.

Amy Schumer Emergency Contact Review: Final Thoughts

This special is definitely meant for those people who are coming on in their 40s, feeling a weird sense of ambivalence toward the world. For those audience members, Amy Schumer is the perfect comedian. She makes active people sound eccentric in a way that comes off too strong, but her cool and laid-back attitude gives her audiences the opportunity to project their own attitudes onto her. She is incredibly talented in crafting and honing a single story, giving it the much-needed kick at the right time.

What this special lacks is turning the different knobs of comedy. She uses her trusty tool to make audiences laugh but doesn’t play around with the other elements that make comedy interesting. There has to be something pulling us in, keeping us guessing and making everything a little mysterious, so we can’t guess the punchline at the end. Apart from this, Amy Schumer truly represents the face of white feminism because she just has to mention a few words, and the empowered woman stands in support.
