Fantasy series have been taking the world by storm. While Netflix has generally been leading the charge for this with The Witcher and Shadow and Bone, Disney+ Hotstar is also throwing its hat in the ring with American Born Chinese. While almost all fantasy series try to explore real human philosophical concepts while delving into the lore, this one specifically puts identity at the forefront, creating mythology and lore around that.
This innovative series is created by Kelvin Yu, based on the novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang. Apart from the stellar cast, as you will see below, the directors of this show, Lucy Liu and Destin Daniel Cretton, are both associated with fantastic projects. The creator of the series also serves as the writer along with Vali Chandrasekaran, Lana Cho, Lawrence Dai, Aaron Izek, Warren Hsu Leonard and Kai Wu.

American Born Chinese Plot/Synopsis
The trailer starts off by showing two students Jin and Wei-Chen, trying their level best to be relatable kids in school or at least have some kind of clout that doesn’t rely on being generally terrible. Just when a very pretty girl has started talking to Jin, he is called out of his classroom by the principal. She is handing over a student to him, an exchange student from China. He thinks he has been handed a stone that is spray-painted red because this is just bringing him down.
Wei-Chen has been trying his best to fit in with the rest of the students, just as Jin has been doing. He has been finding space to sit in the cafeteria, dressing up American. However, one day, Wei-Chen sees a man with long hair and a beard extending up to his ears. He pulls out his staff and starts fighting with the man. We see Michelle Yeoh’s character make an entrance here, offering to help. At this point, Jin is completely confused about what is happening, but all he knows is that Wei-Chen needs his help.
