A Girl and an Astronaut Review: Bland Series With a Dull Love Triangle

A Girl and an Astronaut (Dziewczyna i kosmonauta) is a Polish science fiction series that simultaneously unfolds in 2052 and 2022, exploring the consequences of an astronaut’s return to Earth after a 30-year space mission. The series is directed by Bartosz Prokopowicz and written by Agata Malesinsk, and is divided into six episodes with an average runtime of 50-55 minutes.

The cast of the series includes Magdalena Cielecka, Magdalena Boczarska, Grzegorz Damiecki, Anna Cieslak, Vanessa Aleksander, Andrzej Chyra, Andrew Zhuravsky and many more.

The official synopsis of the series reads as

An astronaut’s return after a 30-year disappearance rekindles a lost love and sparks interest from a corporation determined to learn why he hasn’t aged.

-A Girl and an Astronaut Review Does Not Contain Spoilers-

The story of this science fiction series revolves around Marta, a middle-aged woman, who lost her love interest Niko (an aviator turned astronaut) when he disappeared into space nearly 30 years ago. One day, out of the blue, Niko’s space shuttle returns to earth in a miraculous manner, which eventually leads to some shocking set of events.

The self-sufficient Marta tries to deduce the conspiracy behind Niko’s disappearance and revisits some pivotal moments from her past. And even though she admits to having moved on from Niko, the entire process of deduction reignites her long-lost feelings of love.

The show travels back and forth in time, to give us a glimpse of their connection, and the domino effect that took place three decades later. It tries to establish a half-baked love triangle between Marta, Niko and Bogdan, that is simply dull, lifeless and lacks any real emotional weight.

The show’s biggest issue is the lack of character development. For instance, the characters of Bogdan and Marta are written as shallow, one-dimensional roles with little to no personality. Their actions and motivations are difficult to understand, and it’s hard to root or empathize with their struggles. Niko, the astronaut, is no better. In the future, he is portrayed as a mysterious, brooding figure with no clear purpose or goal. And in the past, a sly smirk attempted to denote his entire personality.

All in all, this lack of characterization makes it difficult to care about the story’s outcome and ends up building a pyramid of moments that fall completely flat. Furthermore, another issue with the show is the perplexed narrative. The story jumps back and forth between 2022 and 2052, but the time travel element is poorly executed.

The show fails to establish a clear connection for timelines, and the jumps between the past and the present only add confusion to an already congested story. It almost feels like the series has used time travel as a lazy plot device to move the story forward, rather than exploring its potential for storytelling.

The corporate conspiracy subplot is also underdeveloped and lacks any real stakes. The corporation’s interest in Niko’s return and his lack of ageing is forcefully explored and explained, making it difficult to relate it to the theme of the story.

Notably, the only element that outshines the series is its visual effects, which are pretty impressive but can’t make up for the lacklustre storytelling. The space scenes are well-crafted and look stunning, but the show’s attempts at emotional moments doesn’t come any closer to the VFX.

A Girl and an Astronaut Final Thoughts

A Girl and an Astronaut
A still from A Girl and an Astronaut

A Girl and an Astronaut is a disappointing series that fails to deliver on its promising premise. The lack of character development and mixed-up space love triangle will make it difficult for a six-episode binge. The show tries to explore themes of love, loss, and time travel but fails to deliver a convincing storyline. Therefore, If you’re looking for an emotionally resonant cosmos story, then this might not be the right fit for you.
