While the British singer and songwriter is often topping the charts or having another viral moment on social media, we bring you some underrated Harry Styles songs that deserve another listen – especially on his birthday. Born on 1st February 1994, the One Direction member who has one of the most prolific solo careers, has time and again proved his mettle. We all know about his best-known songs, however, the B-side tracks are no less which we will be diving into below.
5 Underrated Harry Styles Songs
Canyon Moon
Canyon Moon is the tenth track on his second solo album, Fine Line, which was released on the 13th of December 2019. The lyrics of the song recall the bittersweet memories of the past and wanting to go back home.
While many must know the song Watermelon Sugar which was a viral hit, not many mention this song which took a different musical route from other tracks on the album. With some folk/country influences, the song is easy to listen to while driving around the open fields or a road trips.
Sweet Creature
Sweet Creature is a folk acoustic ballad from his self-titled debut studio album in 2017. The song was released prior to the album’s release and it aptly describes the situation in a relationship, where both people are going through a rough patch and arguing all the time. But at the end of it, they know that no matter how many differences they have, they still belong together.
Harry Styles earnest vocals and the song show his personal style of musicality which sounds quite different and more mature than compared to his boy band days.
Carolina
Another song from his debut album that will definitely get you grooving with its funky beat. It needs a special mention due to the favourite ad-lib parts – oh yeah and la la la la la. It may not have been noticed a lot when it was released but on tour when this song starts playing, you should see the crowd getting turned up.
Also, the story behind the song is pretty hilarious too which went all the fans on a witch hunt to find the girl on which the song is made. It turned out to be a girl named Townes (which is also mentioned in the song lyrics) and she had actually met the singer on a blind date, which must have left quite an impression to be turned into a song.
Matilda
Matilda is a song that comforts you when you feel like you are the only one in the world, with no one by your side. Also, the theme of making a song about a real person continues although the singer moulded the real story into the fictional character of Matilda from the Roald Dahl book and the film of the same name.
The song asserts a common theme in the album that home is not a place, but a state of mind. It talks about a person whose family didn’t treat them well and even if we want to help them (take away from the situation), the best we can do is listen to their story and let them know that sometimes you can walk away. It isn’t necessarily that a family chooses you but you can make your own chosen family, with the ones who treat you the way you deserve.
Grapejuice
Grapejuice is a song that can be played in a cafe, bar or anywhere people are having a drink. It is the third track on Harry’s House album which was released in 2022. Whether you are going through a heartbreak or just genuinely love wine/alcohol, sipping on it while listening to the song is a different vibe, which also feels nostalgic.
