Supernatural Thriller Kdramas: There’s just something about supernatural thrillers that has viewers in a death grip. Today’s Korean dramas have evolved from simple ghost stories to complex thrillers that blend folklore, horror and human psychology, making us question ourselves and those around us and genuinely wonder whether this can happen to us. The best kind of horrors are those that are too close to reality and make us question whether or not we can ever fall prey to them. Mysteries that are wrapped in the supernatural, thus, hit the hardest.
5 Bingeworthy Supernatural Thriller Kdramas
Soul (2009)

Cast: Lee Seo-jin, Lim Ju-eun, Lee Seo-jin
One of the earliest K-dramas to go full-on supernatural, this series follows twin sisters Ha-na and Doo-na, and when one of them dies in a tragic accident, the other gets possessed by her spirit, leading to a chilling tale of identity, vengeance and the blurred line between the living and the dead. Dark and violent, the drama was different from all the other shows of the time and brought forth something very deep and disturbing that left viewers on edge. It was ahead of its time in the sense that it blended police procedural with supernatural elements so effortlessly that it was difficult not to be hooked.
The Master’s Sun (2013)

Cast: So Ji-sub, Gong Hyo-jin, Seo In-guk, Kim Yoo-ri
This cult-favourite drama is a supernatural romance like no other. It tells the story of a woman who can see ghosts after an accident and a man who can stop the ghosts from haunting her. What makes the drama memorable is the perfect blend of horror, comedy and heartfelt romance. It will give you goosebumps while also leaving you on edge throughout. However, this isn’t a terrifying tale full of blood and murder; in fact, it’s a soft tale about healing, trust and finding comfort in the most unexpected person.
The Guest (2018)

Cast: Kim Dong-wook, Kim Jae-wook, Jung Eun-chae
If you need a dose of truly terrifying, pure horror, then The Guest is your safest bet. Diving deep into Korean shamanism, exorcism and possession, the series follows a psychic, a detective and a priest who team up to confront and stop a powerful spirit that destroyed their lives. The raw horror elements and the intricate storytelling make this series unmissable, and the relentless atmosphere almost feels claustrophobic. There’s no break from the grim atmosphere, which makes it different from other shows. You are immersed in a fight where victory feels impossible.
The Cursed (2020)

Cast: Uhm Ji-won, Jung Ji-so, Sung Dong-il, Jo Min-su
This one is unique in the sense that it blends shamanistic curses, supernatural revenge and corporate greed into one interesting tale. The series, created by Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho, follows a teenage girl with shamanistic abilities who joins a reporter to expose a dark conglomerate. It explores how supernatural powers intersect with greed and power, and stands out because of its chilling exploration of how evil manifests through systematic corruption and human ambition, and not just through spirits and rituals.
Death’s Game (2023)

Cast: Seo In-guk, Park So-dam
Based on the webtoon Death’s Game by Lee Won-sik, the drama follows a young man who, after attempting to end his life, gets embroiled in a dangerous game with Death wherein he must reincarnate and then die 12 times before he is sent to hell. The drama is unique in the sense that, although there have been other shows that deal with reincarnation and death, Death’s Game does a fantastic job of building a world that is unique in every sense of the term. It’s not particularly gruesome, but it’s extremely thought-provoking and will leave anyone on edge.
