For those among us who love watching the dark and grisly side of things that are relentless and ever-thrilling, even after they are over, then we have a treat for you. Whether it be romance, thriller, crime or drama, any show can end up with a dark and grisly ending with the right push and twist! That being said, check out these shows with dark endings that left our mouths agape at the end of them!
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Showcasing the life of teen witch Sabrina Spellman, a character from the Archie comics, the series, with two seasons, goes through the ups and downs of her life as she tries to balance her human and supernatural lives as things get more and more complicated the older she gets. The series, starring Kiernan Shipka, Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis, Chance Perdomo, Michelle Gomez and others, is a thrilling and witchy ride that gets better and better in every episode thanks to its rich storyline and talented cast.
However, it’s the ending that puts everyone on edge. When we reach the end of the series, a sudden twist takes us to very dark avenues which will make you do a double take.
Ozark

Marty and Wendy Byrde, a seemingly normal couple, move their family to the Lake of the Ozarks in order to launder money from the Mexican cartel in this thrilling series starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney in lead roles. Apart from the exceptional performances, the suspense throughout the series is something that audiences look forward to and it simply grows from one episode to another.
Plus, the directional is so well done that it makes you forget the world while you get deeper into the murky lives of the Byrde clan. The writing is crisp and witty and keeps things moving at a splendid pace throughout. However, that ending is not only divisive but also extremely disturbing, but for entirely different reasons!
Breaking Bad

When Jesse Pinkman and Walter White get together to get into a life of crime and navigate its seedy underbelly for the first time, most audiences probably didn’t know what awaited them in the series’ 5-season run. Starring Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul in lead roles, the tense and thrilling ordeal that the two men go through while getting into the meth-making business.
The series is loved by all, particularly because of its thrilling storyline with humorous undertones and the fantastic acting by the leads whose chemistry with each other is a particular highlight. The series touches on several topics of interest throughout its run, but it’s the tension and the suspense that reigns heavily throughout and reels you in and doesn’t let you go.
But it’s the end of the era that really brought that feeling home. The last episode is a poignant tip-off to White’s own journey in the series and leaves us questioning his real motives and whether he was the anti-hero that we were promised or something much more than that. The insinuation is thrilling and shocking, much like the rest of the series.
Hannibal

This psychological horror-thriller series, starring Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen as Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter, is a series that is thrilling, absolutely shocking and oddly romantic (if the internet fandoms are to be believed). Its presentation of madness and the polished way in which it showcases its horrifying thrills cater to psychological horror fans in a way like no other.
Of course, the series is not for those who don’t enjoy violence, because the series showcases some pretty horrifying things without batting an eye. The execution of these kills, however, is almost artistic and the fantastic performances, especially from Mikkelsen who looks like he was meant to be Hannibal, will make the hairs on your neck stand up in every episode. The impending sense of doom is intense and doesn’t let up even for a minute.
However, that finale – gosh! What a ride that was. Bringing their codependent relationship to a perfect end, the shocking twist might probably be the way for the series to say goodbye because there’s no alternative for the two of them – the hunter and the hunted can’t live with each other and neither can they live without each other.
How I Met Your Mother

This sitcom showcases Ted Mosby telling his kids how he met their mother. Taking place over nine seasons, the series is a heartfelt recounting of a group of friends and their relationship with one another. It’s a funny, sweet and oftentimes warm story and the chemistry between the cast, including Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan is just so great that it gets difficult to detach yourself from them.
Unfortunately, and this might just be completely a personal issue at this point, the ending is not only horrible considering the flow of the story but it’s extremely dark considering the rest of the series. Honestly, if nothing else, fans shouldn’t be subjected to that ending after watching a series for 9 seasons and expecting an end that ties everything together.
