Busan International Film Festival 2023 Closing Film

The 2023 satirical Chinese film The Movie Emperor will be closing the festival on October 13. It has been directed by Ning Hao and written by Liu Xiaodan, Wang Ang and Daniel Yu, and stars Andy Lau and Ning Hao himself. Now set as the closing film at this year’s BIFF ceremony, the Chinese movie first premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023.

About the film: The legendary Hong Kong actor Andy Lau plays the role of Lau Wai-chi, a has-been film star who misses out on the opportunity to bag the Best Actor Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards. In pursuit of a serious movie that would grant him an award-winning role and recognition at an international film festival, Lau reaches out to director Lin Hao (played by Ning Hao), who then casts him as an ordinary villager in his new movie.

Blurring the line between fiction and reality in the world of filmmaking, The Movie Emperor delves into a number of issues that not only critique the personal life of the movie actor, but also how various schools of filmmaking differ from each other. Driven by capitalism, the film industry is also brought under scrutiny owing to the falling levels of authenticity that define it in the contemporary days.
