10 Upcoming Tamil Movies That’ll Make the Second Half of 2023 Enjoyable: Jailer, Leo, Dhruva Natchathiram and More

The Kollywood industry has been serving top-notch movies for decades and decades but 2023 is quite special. Certain movies that started their production and promotions years back are finally going to come on-screen this year. These upcoming Tamil movies bring to plate various genres like romance, thriller, action, and more. Additionally, famous actors like Superstar Rajinikanth mark their biggest comeback this year.

The best part is these movies’ soundtracks are already hitting the charts and when the flick actually comes out, the craze is going to be massive. While there are plenty of Tamil movies coming out in the second half of 2023, we’ve handpicked only 10 films that will burn the box office. Let’s get ahead.

10 Upcoming Tamil Movies of 2023

Jailer – August 10

It’s South India’s pride Superstar Rajinikanth’s time. After his constant hits like Petta, Kabali, Kaala, and such, the big man is back with another movie where Anirudh Ravichander is scoring the music. The superstar is known for his iconic hairstyle and walk. Staying true to his mannerisms, Jailer is yet another movie for his old and new fans to witness his specialities. Starring alongside him, Tamannaah Bhatia is giving a comeback in the Kollywood industry after years, so her fans are anticipating her role.

Leo – October 19

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has become the viewers’ favourite as he is the first director to release movies where the characters have an effect on his other movies. Like the Conjuring or Marvel franchise, his movies are called the Lokiverse due to his connecting narratives. Focusing on that, he is bringing actor Vijay into his collection of action heroes in the new movie Leo.

In the flick, there is also an alter ego of Vijay, and fans are super excited to witness the star’s double action. Additionally, actor Vijay has stated that after this movie, he will be on hiatus, so fans are definitely not going to let him down.

Dhruva Natchathiram – Mid-July

Director Gautham Vasudev Menon is known to test the viewers’ patience. Starring Chiyaan Vikram, Dhruva Natchathiram was planned to be out in the year 2019, and it’s already been 5 years. Finally, he has confirmed that the anticipated film will come out this July and shock the fans. Vikram became viral two years back due to the curse word he used in this film’s trailer. Hopefully, it won’t be censored in the movie because his fans are particularly waiting for that scene.

Maaveeran – July 14

Sivakarthikeyan’s last hit Doctor faced heavy criticism for dark humour and highly debatable content. Somehow he was let loose despite offending a lot of people. After taking his time, his new movie Maaveeran is going to come to the big screen with a not-so-unique plot, I guess. From the looks of it, it’s going to be an action film set in a rural area which is maybe this actor’s comfort zone. Hopefully, with appropriate jokes and a passable plot, the upcoming movie will work out.

Kolai – July 21

Music director turned actor Vijay Antony rose to fame with his movie Naan. After that, he has been self-producing plenty of films, and it’s all a hit which is a surprise. His recent release Pichaikkaran 2, was positively welcomed. It has been only a few months since this movie came out, and he already has another one in store for the audience.

With Kolai, Vijay Antony marks his 12th movie in a span of 10 years. He still works as a music producer and has promised his fans a concert this year.

Jigarthanda DoubleX – Mid-July

Raghava Lawrence, who is known for his Horror movie franchise, this time has decided to take a break from scaring people to entertain them like old times. Alongside him, S J Surya, the crazy good actor, has set expectations high for the people. When it comes to comedy, both Lawrence and Surya won’t fail, so it’s deliberate that Jigarthanda DoubleX is going to be a family entertainer. Also, the teaser looked promising, thanks to the editing team.

Thangalaan – Release Date Not Known

2023 is surely Chiyaan Vikram’s year. Now that his already huge fanbase has doubled up due to his eccentric role in Ponniyin Selvan, his other film Thangalaan is being craved by the audience. Vikram is known as the Johnny Depp of South India because, in every movie, he has a different aura and style.

In this upcoming Historical drama, the stunning actor looks totally different with a long beard, a bun, and a toned body. Since this movie is based on the real story of Tamil labourers back in the day, we’re sure he will emit the emotions of tortured people perfectly.

Ayalaan – November

Unlike Maaveeran, Sivakarthikeyan’s next movie feels like a new turn in his acting career. Previously, he acted as a superhero in the flick Hero, which didn’t sit well with the viewers. After that, he returned back to acting in movies with less action and drama. However, the actor has convinced himself with yet another VFX-loaded flick Ayalaan, where he looks like he is helping out an alien. Ok? Let’s see how the movie turns out because A R Rahman is the music director.

Captain Miller

Dhanush has received so many national awards for his natural acting and also bagged roles in Hollywood for the same reason. Though his last movie was a big flop, his die-hard fans are sure that Captain Miller is going to give him a breakthrough and, why not, another big award. From the looks of the poster and the plotline, we do believe this man will make a change this year.

Another interesting thing about this movie is the music producer G V Prakash, the man who has worked in most of Dhanush’s national award-winning films. Since the combo is deadly good, the flick would be a banger too.

Japan

Karthi is yet another actor who got immense praise after his stellar role in Ponniyin Selvan. To keep the fame alive, his next project, Japan is said to be released this year. After reading the title of the movie, one might wonder how racist the movie could be because the flick is said to be based on a South Indian thief. But you see, we might never know what’s the deal until the movie comes out. Anyhow, with just its title and the controversy it has created, Karthi’s fame has started to manifold.
