Candy: A Death in Texas
One of the best shows on Hulu in 2022 has to be, hands down, Candy. The series had a five-day, back-to-back release of each of its episodes and created a frenzy unlike any other show out there. The true crime limited series is created by Nick Antosca and Robin Veith with Jessica Biel in the titular role, telling the real-life story of Texas axe-murderer Candy Montgomery.
Under the Banner of Heaven
Another true crime limited series that clearly left everyone cold in their seats and emotionally overwhelmed was Under the Banner of Heaven. The series stars Andrew Garfield in the central role and is created by Dustin Lance Black based on the nonfiction book by Jon Krakauer of the same name. The series shows us two detectives investigating a brutal double murder connected to Mormonism.
The Patient
Possibly one of Steve Carell’s best works of his career, The Patient started off slow but, quickly was able to wrap us around it completely. A psychological thriller at its core, the show is a limited series with a total of ten, 20-30 minutes episodes. Created and written by Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, the series stars Carell alongside Domhnall Gleeson and Linda Emond and, is about a therapist who is being held captive by his serial killer patient, who wants to get better.
Connect
Rely on K-dramas to step in and steal the year. Hulu has been no exception to this rule with the psychological horror show Connect holding the attention of viewers all over the world. The South Korean drama series is created by Takashi Miike and is based on a webtoon of the same name. It stars Jung Hae-in, Go Kyung-pyo, and Kim Hye-jun and is about a mysterious tale that takes place when a man, who has been deprived of a part of his body by organ hunters, finally gets to connect with the person who has received his organ through a transplant.
The Dropout
‘Tis have been a year of crime dramas and we have been clearly living in it. The Dropout being on this list helps us prove just that. Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, the series is based on the podcast of the same name hosted by Rebecca Jarvis and produced by ABC News. We have Amanda Seyfried leading the show which documents the disgraced biotechnology company Theranos and its founder Elizabeth Holmes.
The Girl From Plainville
A miniseries that recounts the events that led to the death of Conrad Roy and how his girlfriend Michelle Carter was convicted of the crime under the charge of involuntary manslaughter. The romance-gladdened biography of actress Pamela Anderson and Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee made headlines quite often this year, for reasons both good and bad. It was stunning to see the other side of the story of these two celebrities beyond the television coverage and newspaper cuttings through Hulu’s Pam and Tommy created by Robert Siegel with Lily James and Sebastian Stan in the leading roles.
Kindred
With only one season, this fantasy-drama cum science fiction on Hulu was really a breath of fresh air amongst all the true crime series and thrilling dramas that the OTT platform kept spewing at us. With a total of eight episodes, Kindred features Mallori Johnson and Micah Stock and is developed by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, based on the novel of the same name by Octavia Butler. The show revolves around a young aspiring writer who uncovers her family’s past secrets while being pulled back and forth in time to a 19th-century plantation.
The Cleaning Lady
The Cleaning Lady became so popular so fast that the show is already in its second season within a year! The crime drama of FX is developed by Miranda Kwok and is based on the 2017 Argentinian television series titled La chica que limpia. Élodie Yung stars as the show’s protagonist along with Adan Canto, Oliver Hudson, Martha Millan, Eva De Dominici and others.
Alaska Daily
Talking about one show on Hulu that came out in 2022 that needs to be talked about more? Well, it has to be this show by the award-winning film Spotlight’s Tom McCarthy.
