Zee5’s Kya Meri Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai? Review: A Mild Entertainer

Kya Meri Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai? premiered on 10th September 2021 on Zee5. Directed by Ssaurabh Tyagi, the Hindi-language film stars Jassie Gill, Surbhi Jyoti, Vijay Raaz, Surekha Sikri, Neelu Kohli, Brijendra Kala, Atul Srivastava, and Vibha Chhibber alongside other cast members.

Sonam Gupta is Back!

Back in 2016, the internet went crazy over a 10 rupee note that had 4 words scribbled on it “Sonam Gupta Bewafa hai” (Eng: Sonam Gupta is Unfaithful) and in no time this became a trend. Furthermore, everyone named Sonam was made fun of or either straight up called ‘unfaithful’. Those were weird times! Progressing into 2021, Zee5 brings to its viewers a Zee5 original titled Kya Meri Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai? with a basic storyline but funny moments here and there.

The film tells the story of Sonam (Surbhi Jyoti) who is a town heartthrob and literally everyone in the town is in love with her and wants to impress her! And amongst these loverboys is Sintoo (Jassie Gill) who eventually manages to be with Sonam but it doesn’t take much time for things to go south and Sintoo’s loves story comes crumbling down. As the film progresses we follow the journey of Sonam and Sintoo as they deal with love and life in their own, sometimes twisted ways!

Zee5's Kya Meri Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai? Review: A Mild Entertainer 3

Undeniably, Kya Meri Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai? plays into some tropes that we have seen before like small towns, the obsession with one girl, one deeply in love boy, family drama, and more but the mostly one-sided romantic inclusion in the film doesn’t leave a mark on the viewers. You know from the very beginning that Sonam isn’t invested in Sintoo and therefore, you’re ready for the worst and when things go downhill you’re not taken aback!

But I’ll give it to the film in terms of slightly comical moments, they are well placed and will make you chuckle even if not laugh. In terms of its character, the cast ensemble is great but what takes the film down is that it doesn’t materialize the cast to their full potential. There is a lack of conviction in the script and thereof in the characters.

The idea of Sonam and Sitoo’s characters are complex, there is a lot to understand and unravel as to why they behave or act out the way they do. What is their motivation? Kya Meri Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai? fails in adding that depth to the characters leading us to see them only from the surface level and not relating to them.

Overall, despite few flaws Kya Meri Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai? is a good family entertainer and doesn’t require a lot of brains, it’s simple and sometimes funny and enjoyable if you don’t put too much of your mind into it.
