You People Trailer: Jonah Hill’s Blooming Romance Sparks Family Feud

Netflix dropped the upcoming film, You People‘s trailer and it has received positive reviews. Directed by Kenya Barris, known for his ABC sitcom Black-ish, You People will be the director’s OTT debut. The movie ropes in famous stars such as Jonah Hill (21 Jump Street), Eddie Murphy (Coming to America), Lauren London (Without Remorse), Nia Long (Fatal Affair), David Duchovny (Californication) and other notable actors.

The official Netflix description of the film reads, “Families and cultures clash when two LA millennials from different backgrounds fall in love and face the ultimate relationship test: meeting the parents.” Jonah Hill is well known for his comedy films, and his partnership with Eddie Murphy is highly anticipated.

In the newly released trailer, we can see Ezra (Jonah Hill) stumbling to answer one of his Jewish relative’s questions regarding his girlfriend. Ezra is a hopeless romantic trying to find someone to settle down with for real. As life throws lemons at him, one fine day, he gets inside a car, thinking it is the Uber service he called. Guess what, he gets into a random woman’s (Amira) car because the supposed Uber driver’s face is similar to hers.

After that incident, Amira (Lauren London) and Ezra bond and soon start dating. Ezra’s friend finds it sceptical because interracial relationships can be tricky. After spending quality time with his boo, Ezra finally decides to propose to his girlfriend, Amira. When the time comes, Ezra meets Amira’s parents, Akbar (Eddie Murphy) and Fatima (Nia Long).

Now we know it isn’t just an interracial relationship; Ezra is Jewish, while Amira is Muslim. Nervous enough, Ezra believes Amira’s family hates him, but to his surprise, something weird also happens to Amira. When Amira is taken to meet Ezra’s parents, they give her a warm welcome only to talk non-sensibly about how Americans shouldn’t hate black people.

Amongst all the chaos, during a dinner night with both families, a quarrel sparks when they initiate a talk about slavery. Ezra’s dad, Arnold (David Duchovny), says that technically they are the “OG slaves”, to which Akbar asks whether they’re trying to compare the “holocaust with slavery.” The family then start an uncomfortable discussion leaving Ezra to plead for the potatoes.

In the end, we can see Ezra going to the hair salon with Akbar, where a black man addresses, Akbar as Ak and asks why he’s bought a “white cuzz.” Ezra, who initially doesn’t understand it, finally realizes that he’s the alien there.

Honestly, this trailer might be for 3 minutes long compared to other trailers that tell off the whole movie’s plot, You People garnered more of my attention. I am curious to see how a White Jewish and a Black Muslim’s relationship will go about while the families pull the hair.
