You People Ending Explained

Ezra is a Jewish man working a corporate job in finance, unhappy with the way his life is going. This isn’t just about his job. It is about the fact that he doesn’t have a girlfriend or a wife who truly understands him. His friend Mo tells him that if he weren’t so desperate or, in her words, ‘thirsty’ for love, he might actually find it. They then descend into a prolonged conversation about the vibes Ezra is giving out by comparing him to the different Drake albums.

Keeping Mo in mind, Ezra decides to be chill and not overtly thirsty about his desire to get a girlfriend. One day, when he is walking back from work and gets into his Uber, the driver starts attacking him, and he realises that it is not actually his driver but just a random person stuck in this place who doesn’t have directions to her new job yet. Amira relaxes and allows him to guide her to the location.

The two of them bond over this strange misunderstanding and become friends. However, when she meets her father and brother, she lies to them and tells them that he is black and Muslim. The two become closer and eventually start dating seriously. They started having conversations about meeting each other’s parents.

Amira meets Ezra’s family first, and they could not stop referencing hyper-specific elements from black culture. While Shelley, Ezra’s mom, was trying her best to be cool, it came off as crass and offensive most of the time. But he explained that he intends to ask her to marry him, and Shelley couldn’t stop beaming, which gives audiences a glimpse into the fact that she is probably not as racist as her behaviour is making her out to be. However, the rest of the meeting was so terrible that they put the other one on pause.

They plan a meeting with all the family members. The two make a final effort to be together with their in-laws, but it ends terribly for both of those people. Akbar humiliates Ezra in a barbershop, while Shelley makes everything about Amira a tokenised race thing. However, they decide to blow past this and focus on the rehearsal dinner. Where Ezra finally confronts Akbar about the humiliation he has been put through and the kind of behaviour that isn’t respectful to him because all he has done is love Amira.

Somewhere else at the party, Amira confronts Shelley about her behaviour and hurts her so much that she starts tearing up in the middle of the party. This interaction leaves Amira with a single option, she breaks it off with Ezra. So now, things are terrible for both of them. Three months later, Ezra is still going on dates he doesn’t enjoy attending.

Akbar and his brother are talking about this breakup, and the brother points out that Akbar had never made an effort actually to understand Ezra. He just walked in, thinking he could do whatever and things would be fine. Pondering over this, Akbar calls Shelley and decides to get over their differences to keep the wedding a surprise for their children. Amira and Ezra are tricked into going to their favourite sneaker store, where they find that the place has been decked up with guests, decorations and an Imam.

The two get married and things essentially end happily for the two characters. This film is really wholesome, hilarious and decides to have some hard conversations around race while also keeping human empathy in mind.
