West Side Story First Reviews: Steven Spielberg Directorial Receives Praises

Steven Spielberg’s 2021 musical romantic drama, West Side Story seems to be receiving only praises and compliments for its stellar performance. The screenplay is by acclaimed writer Tony Kushner (who we know for the brilliant masterpiece Angels in America) which is based on the second feature-length adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim, which happens to be inspired from William Shakespeare’s epic romance- Romeo and Juliet.

The cast is made of fresh and budding performers which include Fault in Our Stars actor Ansel Elgort and debutant Rachel Zegler along with Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Brian d’Arcy James, and Corey Stoll. We also see Rita Moreno in the supporting cast who was a part of the 1961 West Side Story. This 20th Century Fox presentation has won hearts and garnered all the praises it rightly deserves.

This directorial piece marks Spielberg’s first feature-length musical and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial director has called this film the most daunting one in his career which has given us marvels like The Color Purple, Lincoln and Jurrasic Park. And given all the factors, it shows how hard he has worked to make it a success. In fact, Variety’s own executive editor of film and media Brent Lang called the film “bold and stirring.”
