The upcoming thriller drama by SBS- Through the Darkness teaser is out. The show is written by Seol Yi Na and directed by Park Bo Ram covering the story of South Korea’s first criminal profiler who looked for awareness in crimes during a time when the motiveless crimes had taken over and serial killers where on the rise and ‘profiling’ did not exist just yet. This upcoming Korean drama will feature Kim Nam Gil stars as Song Ha Young, the protagonist, along with Jin Sun Kyu as Guk Young Soo and Kim So Jin as Yoon Tae Goo.
The South Korean trio is very reminiscent of Netflix’s Mindhunter trio of Holden Ford, Bill Tench and Wendy Carr played by Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv, respectively. The Through the Darkness teaser furthermore confirms an uncanny inspiration it takes from the Netflix series be it in terms of Kim Nam Gil’s instincts or interviewing a serial killer in jail to understand the type better.
The teaser for the K-drama opens a shot of a man wearing a red cap, who stalks a woman in the rain to ultimately attack her in her own house. This connects to the dire need to sort out criminal behaviour when Song Ha Young is bought in by Guk Young Soo and along with Yoon Tae Goo, who is the team leader of the Mobile Investigation Unit, they trio set to decode the meaning and motive behind seemingly reckless and randoms homicides.
Throughout the teaser, we notice the cynicism in accepting the criminal profiling job done by our protagonist and are rebuffed time and again, to which Kim Nam Gil’s character replies, “A profiler isn’t a psychologist who is like a police officer. They’re a police officer who is like a psychologist.”
