The Trunk Review

The plot follows a couple who get into a marriage contract through a company that provides their clients with these contract marriages. But when a mysterious trunk is found in a lake along with a corpse, evidence soon leads the investigators to this company, the couple, and everyone around them. The plot gets intense as we delve into the past and present of this couple who slowly begin to realise that their marriage is more than just a contract.

Before we get talking about the wonderful plot, we have to talk about the cinematography of the show. It is simply beautiful, smooth, captivating, and done perfectly right. The cinematography of the show fits perfectly with the theme as the shades and scenes change according to the changing moods of the plot. It gets intense in the right moments, vibrant when there’s a happy scene, and dark when it needs to.

Moving on, we have the performance of the cast that really had us all captivated. The chemistry between Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin is absolutely perfect, and so is the portrayal of their emotions that the audience can feel as they are taken through a flashback. But they aren’t the only ones having us swooning over their chemistry as Jung Yun-ha and Lee Woo also have the same effect on screen. Every member of the cast truly gave their best in this show and we can see it through their respective characters.

The characters are beautifully thought out and created as you see that they each have a role to play which they all play out well. Seo Hyun-jin’s therapist-like role brings Gong Yoo out of the darkness that emerges from his childhood and later comes from his wife. Meanwhile, Lee Woo heals Jung Yun-ha with his love who is patiently waiting for her at all times. The characters are truly all well thought out which makes the viewers pay extra attention to them.

Now, coming to the plot that is based on the popular novel; it was definitely worth the watch. The way the story begins and progresses, reaches its high and ends is absolutely beautiful. The ups and downs take you on a rollercoaster ride which keeps getting better with each episode. However, the best part is how you are unable to predict the happenings of the show leaving no stone unturned to divert your suspicions and continue the plot. It really is a piece of work for mystery lovers because you will not know the real culprit until the final episode.

The romance is also intriguing to watch as it develops from a robotic contract relationship into something healing that later becomes deeper than any of the people expected. The romance fits in perfectly with the mystery that unfolds at the same time, bringing the best of both worlds for the audience. While the two genres play out side-by-side, we have to say that this could not have been done any better than this.

The plot is a perfect blend of mystery and romance and leaves viewers with satisfaction like no other. The cast gives one of the best performances, laced with beautiful chemistry and mindblowing portrayals of the depth each character holds. And finally, we have to say that this is a show that you cannot miss out on any time soon.
