The Swimmers brings the life and journey of the Mardini sisters who escape their war-stricken country and upon coming face to face with death, they make the decision to flee for a better future. With the promise to reunite with the rest of their family, the young girls start their journey along with their male cousin.

However, the journey was easier on paper as they face numerous obstacles, and are tricked at every turn which brings them to a life-and-death situation in the middle of the Aegean sea. However, the two are not ready to give up and swim to lighten the weight of the boat and to pull the boat with other refugees.

But this is not where their troubles end as their safe haven brings nightmares at every turn which brings fear and disappointment for them. The sisters, however, are aware that they need to survive for the ones they love and embark on the path to fulfilling their dreams in this darkness.
The film brings us an emotional and heart-touching story based on the real life of the two sisters with cinematography that is like a cherry on the cake. While the 135 minutes length may have you question your decision of watching the show, it is definitely something that you should not miss out on.
The overall story and the realistic vibe only make it all better, while the music brings in the energy like no other. I have definitely loved the moments when Titanium played which just brought in a very powerful vibe at their worst moment when everything was slipping away.
The actors too have done a wonderful job in their roles and the chemistry between the two sisters really catches your attention, especially because their love-hate relationship is relatable for many.

I also have to add that there are certain dialogues and scenes in the film that have really touched me deeply. From the scene of them standing at the beach seeing people enjoy the sea from where they had just escaped, to the scene at the Olympics where Yusra couldn’t feel more left out.
This film gives a very clear insight into the lives of refugees who escape their homes to save their lives only to find themselves in a place that is no better than their homes.
Summing Up: The Swimmers
Altogether, the film is a beautiful yet saddening film that brings us a wave of inspiration as the two sisters continue their fight for the people who haven’t been able to escape or live a better life. Yusra Mardini swam for those who couldn’t and she has succeeded by becoming their voice.
A film worth watching so don’t forget to check out The Swimmers on Netflix.
