The Runarounds Review

In The Runarounds, a bunch of high-school kids come together to start a rock band while going through the ups and downs of their lives. The series features some great songs, heartfelt conversations and characters whom you’d love to get behind. An underdog story is always inspiring, more so when they win in the end, and this Prime Video series is nothing short of enjoyable, albeit with some issues.

The series entirely features the band members’ struggles, both personally and professionally, and how they overcome a thousand odds to come out winning in the end. There are moments when they give up, moments when things seem impossible and as if the world is against them, but their support for one another turns out to be the biggest win for the gang as they achieve the impossible through it.

I don’t know how high-schoolers live in America, but at times, it feels like an utterly impossible feat to go against your family and live in some random man’s shed while pulling a band off from the ground to superstardom over the course of a summer. The series, thus, is a bit fantastical and unbelievable, but there’s charm here that’s impossible to ignore.

Most of it is from the gang themselves, who all leave a vivid impression on our minds. The series is light-hearted, and most of the issues that the kids face are overcome quite easily. We don’t get answers to some basic problems that come up, but it’s well and good because we are soon taken on another insane adventure.

There are several sequences here that will feel similar, making you do a double-take more often than not. Although the kids’ personal issues are quite relatable, it’s how easily they are able to get the opportunities that they do that feels extremely far-fetched. That being said, viewers will find it enjoyable if they take it lightly and don’t dig too deep. As mentioned previously, the performances are charming and take most of the story’s load on their shoulders. As a result, albeit a bit implausible, the series feels enjoyable and breezy.

The good performances are strengthened by the music, which is quite enjoyable as well. More often than not, I found myself enamoured by the music sequences, which are all played extremely well by all the members. The romance is also sweet and showcases the chaos of teenage years extremely well. Again, I think some of the conflicts needed to be discussed a bit more in depth, but either way, it’s entertaining.

The Runarounds, in the end, ask you to follow your dreams and live life to the fullest. I don’t think putting all of your eggs in one basket is smart, but such is youth when everything feels possible. In the end, I found the series to be quite entertaining and, despite its shortcomings, it makes for a fun time.
