The Perfect Neighbor Review: An escalating altercation between neighbours in Florida takes a lethal turn over children playing in the neighbourhood. The documentary pieces the situations together and brings the shocking truth to light.

The Perfect Neighbor Review

The Perfect Neighbor is somewhat of a unique watch on Netflix in that it consists of no interviews, no voiceovers and mostly no context. We watch 96 minutes of bodycam footage that pieces together the escalating fight between two neighbours in a sleepy neighbourhood over children playing on the street with devastating consequences.

The documentary pieces together seemingly insignificant situations between the two neighbours, initially leaving us to wonder why this is part of a documentary film. However, the situation slowly builds into something horrifying as the building tension leaves you with goosebumps and with a whole lot of confusion.

The documentary is unassuming and thoroughly fantastic. It’s so shocking, and the sheer lack of context or discussion adds to the tension of the film, and you wait with bated breath as things go from bad to worse. Of course, there comes a discussion surrounding gun laws in America that has been a big problem for the last couple of years. I mean, the consequence of having freedom results in a general lack of safety for those who don’t have the means to protect themselves from them, but hey, at least we can freely hold and shoot guns, right?

The documentary film is absolutely harrowing and will leave anyone on edge. It’s one of the best documentaries I have watched in a long time because it doesn’t over dramatise, gives us the facts, but also makes sure that the pacing is not too slow for viewers to lose interest. Its intense storytelling can border on uncomfortable, and viewers will find themselves constantly on edge and hoping for a happy resolution. But, of course, there’s none of that to be found here.

Apart from gun laws, the documentary also brings to attention discussions surrounding racism and how power, paranoia and prejudice can lead to a terrible and avoidable tragedy. I think without saying a lot, the film showcases the hard-hitting truths in an impactful way.
