Planning to Watch the Matrix Resurrections? Here’s a Recap of Keanu Reeves’ Film Franchise So Far!

The long-awaited next chapter, The Matrix Resurrections is just around the corner. It is time to put on the leather and trench coats, prep the glasses and re-enter the Matrix. Produced, co-written and directed by Lana Wachowski, The Matrix film franchise had given a new meaning to the genre of science fiction. We have Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith reprising in their roles from previous films, joined by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Christina Ricci in new roles.

However, before the film hits the theatres an essential recap is required to relive and cherish the journey of Keanu Reeves’ Neo- the chosen one who we almost thought was lost in the world of computers but, in hindsight, the threads of dialogues between Sati & the Oracle start to make sense.

The Journey of Neo to reach The Matrix Resurrections

The Matrix (1999)

In a dystopian future, humanity is unknowingly trapped inside a simulated reality called the Matrix, created by intelligent machines to distract humans as they continue to feed on their human bodies for energy. Thomas Anderson, whose hacker alias is Neo is slowly drawn to the truth that makes him meet Morpheus and Trinity (who later becomes Neo’s love interest), who along with a few others have escaped the Matrix and are now part of the Resistance (a rebellion against machines). He is given the iconic red pill-blue pill choice, which helps him ultimately get out of the Matrix.

However, after being freed from the Matrix, Neo realizes that he isn’t just another rescue mission but, the chosen one (according to the Oracle- an all-knowing entity) and is destined to save Zion, the last human civilization left on the planet. But defeating the evil cyber-intelligence is not child’s play, especially when you have a program hunting you (Agent Smith) and pals who ultimately betray.

The Matrix Reloaded (2003)

After the founding events that take place in The Matrix (1999), Neo finds himself performing tasks that can potentially beat the Matrix program. And, right around the corner though the clock keeps ticking because Zion is at risk with a war against machines, who are determined to finish the last human civilization on the planet.

At the Oracle’s behest, Neo draws a plan to rescue the Keymaker from the Matrix, who leads him to the architect that lands Neo in a puddle of exposition. With 72 hours at hand to save Zion and a lover’s heart to not let Trinity die as she fights off the bad guys, Neo is pulled into a dilemma. Over his head is another villain lurking- Agent Smith. The ultimate decision that Neo takes is a cliche but, a strong metaphor to establish how the film franchise is as much a love story as it is a science fiction thriller.

The Matrix Revolutions (2003)

The wait is not long when we meet Neo next but, it seems like he is trapped inside the Matrix. With machines grilling through the core to enter Zion, Morpheus and Trinity seek unreliable help from around them to finally rescue Neo. Nonetheless, the danger looming over humanity’s last hope never vanishes into thin air because the program, now a rogue & unbalanced equation of the Matrix, Agent Smith only wants Neo to die.

Neo, however, strikes to be the better man and cracks a deal with the Matrix in his attempt to be a peace broker- he promises to get rid of Agent Smith & requests the tense war between humans and machines stop. By the end of The Matrix Revolutions, you believe in miracles in the world of machines and walk out with an opening end about Neo’s ultimate fate.
