The Last of Us Episode 9 Review
The Last of Us Finale proves to be a gritty battle between Joel and his suppressed emotions that bring out the worst side of the wounded survivor. The episode peaks in terms of moral corruptness and finds the latter going against all odds to safeguard the interest of Ellie. Moreover, the chain of events sheds light on the questionable arc of Joel, which might have set him on a destructive path hereon.
The last instalment of the season finds the duo of survivors contemplating their position in the apocalypse. It also marks a stagnant point of realization since the first time their journey started. Both Joel and Ellie walk through the debris of destruction only to find themselves amidst a scenic beauty of grazing giraffes.

Initially, Joel attempts to reverse their decision to meet with the fireflies and venture back to Tommy’s. However, it is Ellie, who convinces him about the need to save the world, for what it’s worth. Throughout the episode, we get to see a different side of the gutsy teenager, who reflects the need to sacrifice for the greater good.
Furthermore, when Joel and Ellie end up colliding with the fireflies, the former learns that it might not be in Ellie’s best interest to act as an immunity source. Therefore, upon examining the cons of the decision, Joel switches his rampage mode and brings down hell for the rouge group.

The entire scene where Joel battles it out with the fireflies feels like a catharsis of its own. Where, it almost states that his actions are an outcome of guilt, rather than anything else. He tries to fill the space of regret for Sarah, by going all out for Ellie. And even though his execution is flawed, the situation leaves him no choice.
It’s almost after two complete episodes, that we get to see Pedro Pascal in his full-fledged action avatar. The actor goes all the way in the final ride and ends up curating one of the best silent character outbursts of all time. Although there is a reason for his madness, it will be hard to convince Ellie in future instalments.
